Greifswald honors talented students and suffers from fraud shock!
In Greifswald there is a new source of information for the city's citizens and visitors: a free news blog that brings together current events and local news has recently been offered. With this platform, both locals and vacationers can stay up to date and explore the region's cultural offerings. Baltic Sea newspaper also reports on the outstanding performance of four students who were honored for their creative work at the 72nd European Competition. We are particularly proud of Paula Dabbert, Anna Mathilde Helber and Jasmin Wagner from the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Gymnasium, who were honored with an impressive image installation about famines. Elementary school student Thea Samuel also beamed when she was honored for her picture of a rescue mission.
With over 74,000 participants in Germany and more than 2,100 from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the competition was a real highlight. The awards are not only a sign of individual commitment, but also an inspiration for other young people to contribute their voice and creativity to social issues.
Alarming cases of fraud
But not only positive news comes from the region. The reports of internet investment fraud are just as alarming, as the police in Greifswald warned. A 63-year-old man fell for a fake crypto investment platform and lost a whopping €94,000. A similar incident occurred with a 45-year-old woman who lost 65,000 euros due to a fake bank letter and a call from a supposed bank employee. These scams have become more common recently and police are urging caution.
Events in the area
There's a lot on the agenda in Greifswald and the surrounding area in the coming days. The final round of the beach volleyball tournament will take place in Freest on July 5th and 6th, where teams from across the region will put their skills to the test. At the same time, the Greifswald fire department is expecting large numbers of visitors to its open day on July 5th to mark its 150th anniversary.
The 57th equestrian tournament in Dersekow also promises exciting competitions in jumping and dressage from July 4th to 6th. Anyone interested in musical entertainment should not miss the pop-classical concert with the tenor duo “Tenöre4you” in the St. Jacobi Church on July 21st. Tickets for this are available in advance for 24 euros.
Sport and education united in Europe
Another important topic that affects not only Greifswald but all of Europe is sport. The European Parliament has taken a clear position and called for a new sports model based on values such as solidarity and fairness. A Article notes that rogue competitions that contradict these principles will be rejected. The aim is to create a better connection between popular and elite sports in order to strengthen the entire sports ecosystem.
Sports organizations should play a central role in conveying values in society. Similar initiatives have already been discussed as part of the Erasmus+-funded “Sport for Europe” project. The focus is on linking European values with the principles of sport, such as human dignity and fair play. The exchange between different sports associations should be promoted in order to strengthen social responsibility in sport. Further information can be found on the website of SportAustria.
With all of these developments, Greifswald remains a lively city that has a lot to offer both culturally and socially. Keep your eyes open for upcoming events and get involved in the community - it's worth it!
