Greifswald closes Erich-Böhmke-Straße for a year for 1.1 million euros!
There will be changes to the streetscape in Greifswald in the coming months. The next construction phase for road expansion in the Fleischervorstadt has started. On Monday, October 6th, the starting signal was given for the comprehensive renovation of Erich-Böhmke-Straße. The construction work is expected to take a year and is estimated to cost around 1.1 million euros. As of today, October 7th, the roadway will be completely closed to through traffic, which will mean some adjustments for residents.
In detail, the old road surface on Erich-Böhmke-Strasse between Wiesenstrasse and Bahnhofstrasse will be completely milled away. The sidewalks will also be completely renovated so that pedestrians will be safer on the road in the future. A new storm sewer and modern street lights are also part of the renovation plan. Particularly important for residents: In less developed sections, the properties can be reached by vehicles, even if the road is not accessible.
Alternative parking spaces and garbage disposal
The city has also thought of alternatives. Alternative parking spaces for residents are available at the theater and at the train station at reduced rates. In addition, waste disposal will be organized by the construction company during the construction period so that residents continue to receive their usual service. The aim of the rearrangement of the parking spaces is to provide emergency services with better access to higher floors - an important point for safety in the neighborhood.
The previous renovation of the construction road in Fleischervorstadt was only completed on October 2nd. This 160-meter-long construction road received new surfaces, renewed parking areas and safety strips, at a cost of around 975,000 euros. New drinking water mains and a rainwater drain were also installed at house connections. The collaboration with the city administration is intended to help incorporate further ideas and suggestions from residents into the planning, which ensures greater citizen participation, as adhocracy.plus reports.
A look into the future
The more comprehensive road construction project in Fleischervorstadt is part of the urban development plans that were already discussed at the Urban Development Funding Day in May 2023. Citizen participation is a central concern here, and the measures are gradually taking shape. As part of these construction projects, the future design of the streets will continue to be based on sections that have already been renovated, which is also planned together with the switch to LED technology for street lighting. As ostsee-zeitung emphasizes, the arrangement and use of the parking spaces also remains an important point, because this will influenced by fire protection areas and monument preservation restrictions.
With these measures, the city of Greifswald is pursuing the goal of sustainably improving the quality of life in the butcher suburb and making the streetscape contemporary. Despite the temporary restrictions, it is hoped that both residents and road users will appreciate the long-term benefits of the renovation.
