Green youth elects new duo: Held and Bobga focus on climate justice!

The Green Youth has elected a new leadership duo in Leipzig: Henriette Held, 23 years old and previously state chairwoman of the Green Youth in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, received an impressive 93.6% of the votes. Her partner Luis Bobga, also 23 and a member of the federal executive board, received 76.2%. They succeed Jette Nietzard and Jakob Blasel, who did not run again, and bring a breath of fresh air and clear positions with them.

Held and Bobga both come from the climate protection movement Fridays for Future. In her application speech, Held emphasized the critical connection between the climate crisis and social justice and took a firm stand against the resurgence of right-wing extremist forces in Germany. She also called for greater involvement of young people in decision-making processes, which is particularly important in view of the current developments on the political scene in Germany.

Political priorities and challenges

Bobga took it a step further. He called on his party to reject inhumane asylum compromises and to establish redistribution as a central point of green policy. “We must unite the fights against the climate crisis, poverty and fascism,” he announced, citing the fight against racism and misanthropy as one of his political priorities.

However, the Green Youth does not only have reason to be happy. The organization has been embroiled in various controversies in recent years, culminating in the resignation of the entire federal executive board in September 2024. The current Federal Congress had refused to discharge the board at the time, and Nietzard was criticized for provocative statements.

Increased political interest among young people

In the current political landscape in which Chancellor Friedrich Merz is fighting for the planned reforms of citizens' money, it is even more important that the voices of young people are heard. Merz points out that no one will become homeless and calls for more citizen participation. Given the recent election of Held and Bobga, a new wind could be blowing here that would bring the interests of the younger generation more into focus.

It remains to be seen what changes the Green Youth can initiate under Held and Bobga. But one thing is certain: young voices are loud and want to be heard. A focus on climate protection, social justice and an open commitment to political commitment could be the key to mastering the challenges of the coming years and addressing the relevant questions.
