Jena loses control: Greifswald scores a brilliant draw!
Last Saturday there was a thrilling game between Carl Zeiss Jena and Greifswalder FC in the Regionalliga Nordost, which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw. The encounter in front of 1,283 spectators in Greifswald had everything to offer that makes football hearts beat faster.
Jena started promisingly: Sören Reddemann scored 1-0 for the guests with a header from a corner in the 3rd minute. The cheers were great, but the joy only lasted for a short time. Soufian Benyamina equalized for Greifswald in the 18th minute, before Jena pulled away to 3-1 with two more goals from Marcel Hoppe (26th minute) and again Reddemann (36th minute, penalty). Coach Denny Skibbe's team seemed to be on the road to victory, but the tide turned before half-time. David Vogt made it 2-3 in the 39th minute and ensured an exciting second half.
Passivity costs victory
After the break, however, Jena appeared passive and unimaginative, which took its toll. Joe Richardson took advantage of the carelessness in defense in the 78th minute and scored the equalizer for Greifswald. “We had only conceded five goals in the last twelve games, that was a bitter setback,” commented a disappointed coach Skibbe after the end of the game. Jena is now four points behind leaders Lok Leipzig, who won 4-2 against Halleschen FC on the same day.
For Carl Zeiss Jena fans, the outcome of the game was frustrating, especially given how dominant they were in the first half. Next Friday, Jena will play against Magdeburg II - a game that urgently needs to bring three points in order not to lose touch with the top.
Atmosphere in the stadium
The atmosphere in the stadium was overall positive, despite the bitter disappointment of the late equalizer. Over 10,000 spectators were present at the last home games and provided a fantastic setting. This shows that interest in the Northeast Regional League remains unbroken. Before the game, however, there was also excitement when the action by the Jena Ultras, who had supposedly gotten 200 tickets for Leipzig supporters, was exposed as a fake. Despite this turmoil, the fans' support for the team remains unbroken.
Now it's time to learn the lessons from this exciting match and be better prepared for the next game against Magdeburg II. The players and coaching staff are determined to give the fans reason to celebrate again soon.
