Free train rides to Lubmin: MV day attracts day trippers!

At the weekend the signs point to the Baltic Sea: On the occasion of MV Day in Greifswald, passengers can enjoy free trips to the Baltic Sea resort of Lubmin. The city has decided to close parts of the city center to car traffic, which makes traveling by train and bike particularly recommended. Again Northern Courier reported, the railways offer special trips between Greifswald and Lubmin, despite the fact that regular rail traffic on this route has been discontinued since 1999.

Particularly noteworthy is the historic railway line, which is 25.1 kilometers long and takes around 27 to 30 minutes, depending on the departure point. This route, which was originally built in 1969 to connect the former nuclear power plant in Lubmin, is looking forward to being revived in the form of these special trips. Last year the route was used for the special trip to the Fishermen's Festival, and now there is the opportunity to experience it again.

Train journeys every two hours

The special trips take place every two hours on both Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the first train starts at 10:15 a.m. from Greifswald main station and the first departure from Museumshafen is at 10:42 a.m. Arrival at Lubmin freight yard is scheduled for 11:34 a.m., with a return trip at 11:59 a.m. The last trip of the day starts at 4:47 p.m. from Greifswald and at 5:59 p.m. from Lubmin. On Sunday it starts at 9:20 a.m. What is particularly worth mentioning is that a train with typical MV design is used on both days, which makes the route even more attractive.

The forecasts show that around 395 people would use the route on weekdays and around 522 passengers on weekends, which the railway classifies as “portable”. This could result in further support from the federal government to reactivate the route, as the analysis of the passenger potential shows. Such a reactivation would be a great benefit for the region because it could not only boost tourism, but also appeal to local residents and strengthen the local infrastructure in the long term.

Details about arrival and participation

Please note that no registration or ticket is required for these trips. However, it is advisable to arrive early as places are limited to around 100 passengers per trip. The city of Greifswald encourages citizens and visitors to use the train as an environmentally friendly travel option and to spend a relaxing day at the lido.

For everyone who has always wanted to drive on this historic route, now is the ideal opportunity. Take the chance to take a journey through history and enjoy the fresh Baltic Sea air at the same time - a good way to make the most of the weekend!
