New avenue in Western Pomerania: 306 trees for a greener future!

Things are going green in Western Pomerania: Yesterday the tree friends from Neuenkirchen and Karrendorf started a remarkable campaign. A total of 306 new trees and 1,346 trees were planted along District Road 2. This planting serves as a compensatory measure for the felled trees that were removed during road construction. The district is digging into its pockets and investing around 284,000 euros in this environmentally friendly project. The diversity of species is great, as field maple, hornbeam, hazel, wild apple and hawthorn were selected, among others. “In this way, we not only preserve the Allee cultural asset, but also create new habitats for flora and fauna,” says a district spokesman happily. The nature conservation association BUND welcomes these steps and sees them as an important measure for the preservation of the avenue culture in the region, as NDR reports.

The trees are not only planted to heal road wounds, but also as part of a larger Interreg project that aims to protect avenues in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. This is about developing concepts for the future and creating new avenues. In this way, the original charm of the region is preserved and at the same time biodiversity is promoted.

Reduce tree debt

But the work is far from done. There is still an enormous amount of catching up to do in the entire Vorpommern-Greifswald district when it comes to tree planting. After the last action on German Unity Day, in which 33 Norway maples were planted on district road 30 from Waschow to Lassan, District Administrator Michael Sack emphasized that there are still around 4,200 “tree debts” under the district roads. This number has increased in recent years due to safety risks such as disease or extreme weather conditions. “We need to plant 500 to 750 trees a year to reduce this debt,” explains Sack. This year, a total of 360 trees were planted in the region, but the will to fill the gaps is there, says Katharina Dujesiefken from BUND, who praises the district's commitment. This campaign shows uniqueness in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania when it comes to “unity digging”, as Nordkurier reports.

The importance of trees and forests

Why is this all so important? Sustainable tree and forest conservation has many advantages. According to the WWF, natural restoration helps create stable, natural forests that are resilient to extreme weather conditions and can store CO2. The move away from pure wood monocultures towards diverse, structured forests is of great importance for the future of our landscapes. The tree and forest planting initiative is not only an act of environmental protection, but also a sign of change towards a more environmentally conscious society that takes nature into account in the long term, as WWF explains.

There is a lot going on with tree planting in Western Pomerania. The collaboration between authorities, the BUND and committed citizens shows that with a good hand and a strong community, a lot can be achieved to strengthen the green lung of our region.
