Sparkasse warns: online banking contracts will soon be terminated!

Sparkasse Vorpommern is asking its customers to pay attention: around 2,500 online banking contracts are to be terminated because these customers have not yet agreed to the new, updated terms and conditions. CEO Ulrich Wolff explained that this was the last attempt at contact to avoid cancellations of current accounts. Due to modern transfer technology, which has been in force since an EU regulation came into force on October 1, 2025, customers must agree to a recipient check that ensures that the recipient's name matches the IBAN.

These regulations affect a significant segment of the Sparkasse's almost 220,000 affected customers. According to the Baltic Sea newspaper So far, over 97% of customers, i.e. around 214,000, have given their consent. However, a small number of people who did not respond could not be reached despite several attempts to contact them.

Important changes in transfer transactions

Since October 5, 2025, banks have been obliged to automatically check for transfers whether the recipient's name matches the IBAN provided. This regulation applies not only to SEPA transfers, but also to real-time transfers and standing orders. The goal is clear: twisting numbers and fraud should be avoided. Feedback on the transfer attempts usually occurs within a few seconds, with various feedback provided regarding the match of the name and IBAN.

As the Sparkasse Vorpommern As highlighted in their communication, payers decide for themselves whether to release the payment. However, the Sparkasse is not liable for incorrect transfers if the information does not match.

Real-time transfers – all around the clock

The EU Regulation (EU) 2024/886, also known as the Real-Time Transfer Regulation, promoted the use of real-time transfers. This innovative method allows transfers to be carried out around the clock, so that the amount is available in the recipient's account within ten seconds. Sparkasse Vorpommern must therefore ensure that all new legal requirements are adhered to and requires the consent of its customers to do so.

In addition, banks are obliged to charge the same fees for real-time transfers as for traditional transfers. The option to check the recipient is also offered, which further contributes to security.

The Sparkasse's information campaign will reach all customers, even those who do not use digital services. Customers will be informed of the need for consent by telephone or self-service devices. The benefits are obvious: consent not only ensures access to modern payment services, but also protects against financial mishaps.

If the necessary commitments are not made by January 2026, online banking will be deactivated for the affected accounts. However, if you agree later, access can be reactivated on the same day. Customers should therefore take action to avoid possible inconveniences.
