Swinetunnel: Usedom is booming thanks to new transport connections!

Well, what's going on in the Usedom region? The Swine Tunnel, which was only opened last year after four years of construction, has now developed into an important traffic artery. Every day, around 16,000 vehicles roll through this 1.8 kilometer long tunnel, which connects the island of Usedom with the Polish island of Wolin and creates a transport connection to the Polish mainland. This is reported by the Baltic Sea newspaper. Before the opening, the only way to get directly to Usedom was by car ferry, which could involve waiting times of up to two hours at peak times.

The mayor of Heringsdorf, Laura Isabelle Marisken, praises the tunnel as an excellent connection that not only makes travel easier for tourists, but also has a positive impact on the local economy. Fears that the tunnel could deprive German holiday resorts of guests have proven to be unfounded. Instead, there are still high tourism numbers and better exchange between the sides. Thanks to the new connection, hotels like Rolf Seelige-Steinhoff's are also seeing increasing interest, especially from Polish workers who are flocking to the region.

Economic impulses from the Swine Tunnel

The advantages of the Swinetunnel are undeniable. With 16,000 vehicles a day, the tunnel clearly beats the use of the Peene Bridge in Wolgast, where only 12,000 vehicles pass, as well as the 9,500 vehicles that use the Zecheriner Bridge. The Usedom Insider report that the tunnel guarantees seamless access to Usedom's beautiful beaches and tourist attractions. The opening on June 30, 2023 cost around 220 million euros and, thanks to a well-thought-out construction concept, has proven successful after just two years.

The current traffic flows are not only a sign of the region's attractiveness, but also proof of the importance of a well-developed transport infrastructure, as is required on a large scale in Germany. How Statista emphasizes, investments in infrastructure are crucial for economic growth. The federal government invested around 8.47 billion euros in road transport in 2023, which shows that other areas can also benefit from such a focus.

In summary, it can be said that the Swinetunnel is not only considered a technical masterpiece, but also the key to a flourishing economy and tourism on Usedom. And so it remains to be seen what further positive developments the region will experience as a result of this newly gained connection. One thing is certain: the tunnel has opened up the Usedom treasury and allows it to look forward to a golden future.
