Flu wave in MV: Minister warns of increasing vaccination fatigue!
The flu season is in full swing and flu cases are increasing noticeably in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Health Minister Stefanie Drese (SPD) expresses concern about vaccination fatigue among the population. Despite a vaccination rate of 49.1% among those over 60 - which is above the national average of 38.2% - there is a worrying trend: although vaccination rates have remained relatively constant over the last ten years, they are trending downward.
The target vaccination rate for risk groups is 75%, but the actual willingness to vaccinate leaves much to be desired. Drese therefore strongly recommends the flu vaccination in order to reduce the spread of the virus and effectively protect vulnerable groups. The numbers speak for themselves: Although the vaccination rate in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is above the German average, there is still a lot of room for improvement to achieve the desired goal.
Current situation and outlook
According to information from n-tv, a total of 1,541 flu cases have already been recorded in the northeast in the 2024/25 season. The current respiratory illnesses show that almost 1,300 positive results have been confirmed in the over 3,000 samples submitted since October. However, the majority of these illnesses cannot be traced back to flu viruses; Rather, classic cold viruses dominate with 733 cases and coronaviruses with 356 cases.
The influenza positive rate at the beginning of December shows a surprisingly lower rate compared to previous years. Nevertheless, an increase in flu cases is expected in the coming weeks. To counteract this, flu vaccinations are offered by general practitioners, health authorities and in a limited number of pharmacies - a total of only 353 pharmacies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are active in this area.
Willingness and acceptance of vaccination
Current data on the vaccination society is crucial to better understand the vaccination status in the population. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) emphasizes how important this data is to optimize vaccination recommendations and programs. The distribution of willingness to vaccinate sometimes shows large regional differences.
Overall, it can be said that the issue of vaccination, especially with regard to the flu, is a key concern, not only for individual health, but also for the protection of the community. Minister Drese relies on education and informational support to increase acceptance and motivate the population to get the flu vaccination.
In summary, while the vaccination rate in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is fortunately above the national average, the challenge of getting the population to vaccinate remains. This is the only way to contain the spread of diseases and ensure the health of citizens.
