17 accidents on the weekend: Animal crossing and alcohol cause chaos!

Things went really well in the Uckermark last weekend: the police had to register a total of 17 traffic accidents. This shows once again how important it is to keep a watchful eye on the road.

Among these accidents are seven that were caused by animal crossing. Wild animals seem to be on the move, especially at this time of year, and pose a danger to drivers that should not be underestimated.

Serious accidents and injuries

The outcome of a serious traffic accident in Schwedt on Saturday is particularly worrying. A car and a motorcycle collided on Lindenallee when the car suddenly turned left and overlooked the motorcyclist who had the right of way. The 60-year-old motorcyclist fell and suffered serious injuries, so he was taken to hospital in a rescue helicopter. Fortunately, his 19-year-old passenger in the car was only slightly injured. The material damage amounts to around 20,000 euros. On Lindenallee, one side of the street was temporarily closed while the accident was being recorded.

Another incident occurred on Blumberger Damm in Wartin, where a 70-year-old cyclist fell after braking dangerously. The reason for the braking was an overtaking car that suddenly turned onto a property. Fortunately, the cyclist only suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital. The material damage here was around 100 euros.

Drunk drivers targeted

The Uckermark police station also carried out tests for alcohol and drug consumption as part of the traffic controls. The results are alarming: three vehicle drivers were identified as drunk or intoxicated drivers. On August 29th, a 35-year-old driver in Templin tested positive for narcotics. The following day, a check on a 68-year-old driver in Templin revealed an alcohol-related offense. Finally, on August 31st, a 41-year-old cyclist was stopped in Schwedt with a breath alcohol level of 2.01 per mille, which is considered a serious violation. Corresponding proceedings were initiated against all three drivers.

Alcohol and drugs on the roads are a big issue. As ethanol.dvr.de shows, the risk of accidents increases significantly even if the influence of alcohol is low. From a value of 0.3 per mille, the risk of accidents doubles, while at 1.1 per mille it increases tenfold. Novice and younger drivers often underestimate the dangers that can arise from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, which is a worrying phenomenon.

Consumer behavior under control

Especially in view of the upcoming entry into force of the Consumer Cannabis Act on April 1, 2024, we want to ensure that people are informed about the consequences of consuming cannabis. THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, affects the central nervous system and can significantly impair the ability to drive safely. gib-acht-im-verkehr.de emphasizes that the regulations on driving under the influence of cannabis have been redesigned to improve road safety. A clear THC limit should help to impose penalties if someone drives a vehicle under significant influence.

The call to be careful on the roads couldn't be clearer - for drivers as well as cyclists and pedestrians. Stay alert and pay attention to your safety and that of others!
