Fire drama in Güstrow: praise for the fire department, chaos at emergency shelters!

A dramatic operation took place on May 24th on Steinstrasse in Güstrow. The fire brigade was alerted under the keyword “big fire” after a roof structure burst into flames. Loud Northern Courier Almost 70 emergency services from Güstrow, Karcheez, Lüssow and Bützow were on site to prevent anything worse from happening.

Mayor Sascha Zimmermann (FDP) was also on site and made it clear at a city council meeting that there was an urgent lack of support for the affected residents. Some of them had to be evacuated and several apartments have since become uninhabitable, forcing the city to provide short-term accommodation. But the landlord informed the tenants that it was the city that was responsible for providing housing, which was not well received by everyone.

Helping hands in times of need

Although the city has a small emergency apartment and accommodation in the homeless shelter available, these are only of a temporary nature. Meanwhile, there are heated discussions on social media about the city's ability to communicate. One affected resident even denies that there were any offers of help from the city. Social welfare office manager Mandy Mater tried to provide help in an unbureaucratic manner.

At the same time, the Rostock public prosecutor's office is active because an investigation has been initiated on suspicion of serious arson. The investigation is still ongoing, although further details could not be published for tactical reasons.

Another fire in Güstrow

Feuerwehr Güstrow. Das erste eintreffende Fahrzeug informierte schnell über Personen, die sich im Haus befanden. Zwei Trupps unter schwerem Atemschutz wurden zur Menschenrettung eingesetzt.

Thanks to the rapid intervention of the fire brigade, two people were rescued from neighboring apartments and handed over to the emergency services uninjured. The massive smoke was caused by a fire in the kitchen area, with 26 firefighters and seven vehicles on site. The total duration of the operation was around two hours.

Fire service statistics show that fires in residential buildings represent a particular challenge for emergency services and underline the need for well-organized and communicative structures to ensure the safety of citizens in hectic situations. Reports like these make it clear how important a quick response by emergency services is and how crucial communication between the city, fire department and citizens can be in order to be able to act correctly in an emergency.

At a time when communication between public authorities and citizens is often criticized, it is becoming increasingly clear: there is still a lot of room for improvement. The city of Güstrow must learn from these incidents and will hopefully soon revise its communication strategies.
