Hanse Sail 2025: 500,000 visitors celebrate maritime festival in Rostock!

From August 7th to 10th, 2025, Rostock was once again transformed into the maritime heart of the region. The Hanse Sail, one of the largest meetings of traditional sailors in the world and the largest folk festival in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, attracted around 500,000 visitors. This year the event celebrated its 34th edition and enjoyed wonderful weather conditions that made the maritime event a real highlight. How Northern Courier reported, the appeal and success of the Hanse Sail was unmistakable.

Around 120 ships from nine nations could be seen in the Warnow and the Baltic Sea. Particular attention was paid to the French three-masted barque “Belem”, which acted as the flagship and welcomed around 3,500 interested guests on board on Sunday. Even though there were fewer participating ships this year than last year, almost the same number of sailing tickets were sold, which demonstrates the enthusiasm for the event. In addition, several ships offered short trips that compensated for the cancellation of other offers.

A diverse supporting program attracts crowds

The Hanse Sail is not just a festival of ships. A varied program of events and stages ensured that there was something for every taste. Visitors could enjoy rides, live shows and cultural and culinary experiences. The events stretched along the coast, from Warnemünde to Rostock city center. Particularly noteworthy were the fireworks displays that lit up the night sky on Thursday and Saturday, as well as the performance by the band Marquess on Friday evening, which drew many guests to the main stage.

Tourism director Matthias Fromm praised the organization and integration of the city center into the event. Stalls with regional products and a “Moby Dick” market enriched the offerings and invited people to linger. Thanks to the beautiful weather and well-thought-out planning, most visitors felt comfortable and enjoyed the maritime atmosphere.

Safety and cleanliness in focus

The police perceived the Hanse Sail as harmonious and trouble-free. Over 200 state police officers were on duty every day and recorded a total of twelve crimes, including assault and theft. A woman had to be rescued from the water due to an incident in the city harbor. Despite these events, the organizers and the police expressed their satisfaction with how the festival went.

Another plus this year was the improved waste disposal. The Wismar University of Applied Sciences and the “plastic-free city” initiative had tested a concept for waste management that obviously bore fruit. The organizers reported less waste than in previous years and clean floors, which further underlined the positive overall picture.

The next Hanse Sail is already planned for next year, from August 6th to 9th, 2026. The anticipation for the next big maritime event is already noticeable, and the organizers are optimistic that the success story of the Hanse Sail will continue. The diversity and charm of this unique festival will certainly continue to captivate people in the future. N TV emphasizes that the event is a matter of the heart for many Rostock residents who always look forward to the colorful days.
