Who will be the new provost? Decision on July 5th in Güstrow!
The election is just around the corner and the excitement is rising! On July 5, 2025, a new leadership figure for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Mecklenburg church district will be elected in Güstrow. There are two high-profile candidates in the race: Pastor Jonas Görlich and Pastor Anne Hala. Both bring a wealth of experience and could soon take over the office of provost previously held by Marcus Antonioli, who has now taken over the management of the “Personnel in the Annunciation Service” department in Kiel. Nordkurier reports that the decision on the election will be made at a special meeting of the church district synod.
The applicants have already introduced themselves with a staggered program. Anne Hala, who has been working as a regional mentor since 2021, organized a service in Schwerin Cathedral on June 15th. Jonas Görlich, currently pastor in Lohmen, had his forum on June 21st in the same cathedral. Here the parishioners had the opportunity to talk to the candidates and find out more about their vision for the church.
The candidates in detail
Jonas Görlich, born in Braunschweig, completed his theological training at the universities of Münster, Berlin and Göttingen. Before he began his service as pastor in the Lohmen parish in February 2015, he completed his vicariate in the St. Johannes Hondelage parish. As an active member of the Mecklenburg church district synod and on the church district council, he not only brings theory but also a lot of practice. Church MV emphasizes that Görlich has a good overview of the challenges ahead.
Anne Hala, on the other hand, who was born in Neubrandenburg, refined her theological knowledge in Rostock and Lausanne. She served as a parish pastor in the Proseken-Hohenkirchen parish from 2011 to 2021 before becoming a regional mentor. This experience and her position teaching aspiring pastors makes her an impressive candidate for the position. North Church describes the qualifications of both applicants as excellent.
The electoral process and the meaning of office
The election will take place on Saturday, July 5th, at a special meeting of the church district synod. The committee consists of 55 voting members who must vote for the successor to the previous provost. To be elected, a candidate needs a majority of votes. The newly elected provost will be based in Wismar and will lead one of the four church regions that the Wismar provost includes.
With a total of 38,713 parishioners in 51 parishes, the Mecklenburg parish is a vibrant community. When discussing the coming challenges, such as demographic change and the integration of younger members, it becomes clear how important clear, inspiring and decisive leadership is.
What will happen on July 5th? The parish is eagerly awaiting the new election and the associated setting of the course for future development. The hearts of believers beat high and the results could have a lasting impact on the direction of the church in Mecklenburg.
