Serious accident in Heringsdorf: drunk driving? Driver seriously injured!

A serious traffic accident occurred on September 2, 2025 at around 7:15 p.m. on district road 27, between Mölschow and federal road 111. A 42-year-old German driver lost control of his Opel in a right-hand bend, causing the vehicle to leave the road. The car crashed head-on into a street tree and overturned. Witnesses provided first aid to the driver, who suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, until the emergency services arrived.

The driver was transported to the Greifswald University Hospital in a rescue helicopter. According to the officials, he showed a frightening concentration of 2.12 per mille in a breath alcohol test. The police therefore took appropriate measures: the driver's driver's license was confiscated and a blood sample was ordered. The vehicle involved in the accident was no longer drivable and had to be towed away. The total property damage amounts to around 12,200 euros, as reported by news.de.

Drunk driving: an ongoing problem

The dangers of drunk driving should not be underestimated. According to a study published by the Federal Statistical Office, alcohol-related traffic accidents in Germany caused 37,172 incidents in 2023, resulting in 18,900 people being injured or killed. That means almost 102 alcohol-related accidents per day and a total of 291,890 traffic accidents with injuries or deaths in the same year. Although the numbers in 2023 fell by 4.1 percent in accidents and 7.2 percent in victims compared to the previous year, they still remain alarmingly high. For further details on the statistics see Statista.

What is particularly striking is that personal injuries were recorded in 15,652 of these accidents. More than one in eighty alcohol-related accidents even resulted in a death. The composition of the drunk drivers is also revealing: 43.8 percent were car drivers, followed by cyclists and Pedelec users. These figures make it clear that drunk driving is a problem for society as a whole that should not be taken lightly, as vpv.de makes clear.

Prevention and education are needed

It is clear that prevention measures and increased education about the dangers of drunk driving are urgently needed. The legal alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 per mille, and there is a zero alcohol limit for novice and young drivers. If you have a blood alcohol level of 1.1 per mille or more, you are not only unfit to drive, but you are committing a criminal offense and have to expect further consequences. The incident in Heringsdorf once again shows how important it is to raise awareness of these risks.

The dramatic values and statistics underline the urgency of actively addressing the issue of drunk driving in our society. This is the only way we can ensure that such accidents are avoided in the future and our road traffic becomes safer.
