Ludwigslust cycles vigorously: 77,000 kilometers for a better climate!

In Ludwigslust there was a remarkable momentum in the period from May 10th to 30th, 2025. As part of this year's “City Cycling Campaign”, the city's cyclists showed how much can be achieved with a little perseverance. A total of 868 participants registered via the app and covered an impressive 77,787 kilometers. This saved an estimated 13 tons of carbon dioxide - a clear step towards climate protection and sustainable mobility, which the Stadtwerke Ludwigslust-Grabow is also committed to.

But it's not just the numbers that speak for themselves; The enthusiasm of the participants was also high. A total of 27 teams took part in this competition, and the actual number of participants was around 1,300, including a large number of students. The Ludwigslust-Bahnhofsmission and friends took second place in the team ranking with 2,839 kilometers, while the Monte cyclists covered 2,516 kilometers and took third place. The team from the Catholic Women's Social Service took first place with 3,237 kilometers and thus became the winner of the campaign.

School successes

The schools in Ludwigslust in particular have shown impressive performances. The Lenné School was the most successful school with 262 participants and covered an impressive 21,963 kilometers. The Fritz Reuter primary school and the Techentin primary school also contributed to the overall performance by cycling 17,939 and 9,284 kilometers respectively. Not to forget the Edith Stein School, which contributed with 213 participants and 965 kilometers. The city plans to properly recognize the committed schools in the coming days, which will certainly provide an incentive to get going again next year.

The high level of participation shows that cycling is not only an environmentally friendly alternative to the car, but also a sensible way to promote your own health. According to the Federal Environment Agency, up to 30% of car journeys in urban areas could be shifted to cycling. Regular exercise, such as cycling, can also reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases and increase life expectancy. Cycling is therefore not only environmentally friendly, but also healthy!

A look into the future

The Ludwigslust-Grabow public utility company, which took part again this year, is actively promoting cycling in everyday life. Your team called "Naturally Energy. From Here." has committed itself to protecting the climate and encouraging many citizens to cycle. Last year, the team took bronze in the CITY CYCLING 2024 and covered 3,495 kilometers. This has already created a small but fine tradition.

Given the success of this city cycling campaign, further initiatives to improve the cycling infrastructure could follow. Cities like Copenhagen and Münster demonstrate how positive cycling infrastructure and municipal measures can sustainably promote bicycle use. This would allow Ludwigslust to move a little closer to these role models and give further impetus to the goal of increasing the use of bicycles in urban transport.

The results of the city cycling campaign speak for themselves: 77,787 kilometers, 1,300 participants and a lot of exemplary commitment to the climate. A nice round comes to an end here - but the next attempt is sure to come!
