Apple Maps conquers MV: camera cars film our streets!
In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Apple has sent its camera cars into the race to bring the digital map world into shape. Streets and houses are currently being filmed so that Apple Maps users will soon be able to navigate the area even better. A vehicle with a Munich license plate was recently spotted in downtown Neubrandenburg. According to NNN, these tracking shots have been in use nationwide since May 22nd and end on October 5th, 2023.
The recordings are not only intended to enrich Apple Maps, but also part of a larger plan to improve artificial intelligence (AI) in Apple's products. The surveys are supported by portable systems in pedestrian zones, such as in large cities like Munich, where even a backpack with cameras is used. Apple wants to ensure that its mapping solutions remain up-to-date and user-friendly.
Data protection and objections
A crucial issue in these extensive data collections is data protection. In the interests of privacy, Apple has committed to blurring faces and license plates before publishing the images. According to ZDF, the data protection framework in Germany is clearly regulated and all surveys are carried out under the supervision of the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision. Users can object to the processing of their data at any time, even if images have already been published.
In addition, properties can be made unrecognizable upon request. However, those affected must state exactly which object it is, but can obtain a sample text for an objection from the North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center. This transparency is intended to ensure that those affected are informed about their rights at all times.
Looking into the future
In parallel with the tracking shots, Apple plans to introduce the long-awaited Apple Intelligence feature in October 2023, which will be compatible with the latest operating systems iOS 18.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1 and iPadOS 18.1. According to Apfelnews, AI support will bring many new functions that will make the use of Apple devices even smarter. However, this innovation will not initially be available in Germany and other EU countries, and users will have to wait until 2025 to comply with the Digital Market Act regulations.
It remains exciting to see how Apple's map will develop and how Apple will overcome the challenges around data protection and user rights while at the same time new technologies find their way into everyday life. We are excited about the coming months and what the future will bring us, even if there are still some regulatory hurdles to be overcome before then.
