Luna in distress: Animal rights activists fight against chain farming and for her life!

In a worrying animal welfare case in Schönkamp, the white dog Luna is causing discussion among residents, activists and authorities. On August 7th, the veterinary office found out about their precarious situation, but not all residents share the dog owner's point of view. Loud Northern Courier Luna was reported by the animal rights activist Kerstin Lenz because her attitude seemed unacceptable.

The official veterinarian visited the dog on Tuesday and found that, according to initial findings, Luna was in good nutritional and general condition. However, there are problems with the chain keeping, which according to the public order office must be stopped immediately. Despite the intervention, Luna stays with the dog's owner for the time being, who states that he took her in for a friend and is not the real owner.

Unclear ownership relationships

The situation is described by some residents as untenable. The dog owner himself is dissatisfied and emphasizes that a normal leash is not suitable in his garden because it could get tangled. Interestingly, he also confirmed that Luna does not receive daily exercise, which raises additional concerns. “There’s something going on,” you might say, considering that it’s the owner’s responsibility to ensure the dog’s well-being.

The dog owner who originally took Luna from a former friend is also involved in the discussion. This person who was originally responsible has now spoken out on site and explained that Luna cannot live with her because responsibility for the dog has not been clarified.

The way forward

Despite the difficult situation, there is a certain ray of hope: the public order office has ordered the dog owner to dispose of three broken cars on the property. The incidents surrounding Luna show how important it is that animals do not have to live in unsuitable conditions.

A decision about Luna's fate will be made on Thursday. The dog's owner refuses to be placed in the animal shelter and demands that Luna only be placed in a suitable place. Vilshofen shows that animal protection and the well-being of pets are not just empty words, but that there is a real need for action.
