Neubrandenburg darts trio on the way to the German championship!

This weekend the steel darters of the NB Darts will be competing in Kornwestheim near Stuttgart to demonstrate their skills. The anticipation among the participants is great because it is the German Championship, which is the highlight of the darts season for many players. Among the qualified dart athletes are Nico Lehmann, Robin Holtz and club president Marko Beutel. These three darters qualified for the event via the state rankings, where a total of 16 athletes from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are represented. Loud Northern Courier The exchange of experiences at a high level is an important aspect for the players.

The DDV Association Cup will be held on Saturday, with teams from the regional associations fighting for the title. The men from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania compete with two teams, while the women are represented with one team. “The weekend is a great opportunity for us to play against strong competition,” says Marko Beutel. However, he expects that his players may only play two games on Saturday and a maximum of one game on Sunday, as the field is very strong. With defending champion Kai Gotthardt, who is also competing at the World Cup, they have a real challenge ahead of them.

Increasing popularity of darts

Darts has become an increasingly popular sport in Germany in recent years. Like the page Darts100 reported, the number of members in the German Dart Association rose by 68% from 2018 to 2024, reaching almost 20,000. The typical active darts player is a man between 27 and 60 years old, while women only make up around 8% of organized players. So it's high time to promote more and draw attention to the talent!

Another reason to be happy: Five German players competed at the 2024 Darts World Cup for the first time, which underlines the country's growing importance in the darts scene. Germany is now considered one of the hotspots for darts. This was also evident in major tournaments such as the European Darts Championship, which took place in Dortmund in 2024 and had around £600,000 in prize money on the line.

The challenges of the championship

Although the anticipation is high, Beutel also has realistic expectations for the championships. “The likelihood of us getting far is slim,” he says. Particular respect is paid to the strong opponents from other federal states. The scene is committed and the games promise exciting moments for both players and spectators. Among the participants are Ronny Wetzel from SpVgg Victoria Neustrelitz and Nancy Höhr from Penzliner SV, who will also compete for the title.

In view of this development, it is gratifying to see how darts is being perceived not only as a leisure activity, but also increasingly as a serious competitive sport. So we can only hope that the darters from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania can deliver their performance and perhaps even cause one or two surprises.
