Neubrandenburg Literature Center: Newly headed by Andrea Werner!
There's a lot going on in the Neubrandenburg Literature Center! After the appointment of Andrea Werner as the new director at this cultural hub, which was founded in 1971, there is not only a fresh face on the agenda, but also a whole host of exciting plans. Northern Courier reports that the annual motto for 2026 will be “The Blue from Heaven”, inspired by the comedy of the same name by the writer Rudi Strahl, which touched a nerve of its time. In keeping with this, author Magdalena Schrefer is planning to publish a book called “The Blue from Heaven” next year.
The committed Andrea Werner, who previously worked in the Koeppen Archive at the University of Greifswald and in the Parchim City Museum, has set herself the goal of bringing the literature center even more into people's hearts. She wants to specifically appeal to younger citizens and make more female and diverse perspectives visible in the literary world. This is not surprising, as the literature center is considered an important cultural meeting place in the region and has been operated by the city of Neubrandenburg since 1990.
Diverse offers and planned events
The headquarters of the literature center is in the Brigitte Reimann Literature House, where important estates from writers such as Hans Fallada and Brigitte Reimann are kept. Andrea Werner plans to cooperate with the Friedrich-Bödecker-Kreis MV and to offer the “Wortwächter” project a high-quality program. The literature center also has a permanent exhibition commemorating the writer Brigitte Reimann, and the archive on regional literary history is open to researchers.
Numerous exciting events are already planned for 2026. The start of the year on February 24th will be a homage to Rudi Strahl, supplemented by comments on caricatures by Harald Kretzschmar. On March 24th, Frank Stegemann is planning a presentation about the television novel “Daniel Druskat” by Helmut Sakowski. There are also readings on the program that will address current topics, including Annette Schuhmann's book “We are different” and the new novel by Magdalena Schrefer.
A look into the future
In addition to these events, Andrea Werner would also like to involve interns to promote young people's interest in literature. It turns out that there is great interest in the literature center's offerings both in the city and in the region, which increases the chances for joint projects. The Neubrandenburg Literature Center, with its history and rich holdings, will not only remain a place for reading and writing, but will also actively strive to promote literary creation and reading culture.
