Northwest Mecklenburg's soccer star: Rita Schumacher is moving to BVB!
The football world is looking forward to the new era of a talented player from northwest Mecklenburg. Rita Schumacher, the region's only professional soccer player, has signed a contract with Borussia Dortmund and will now play for the team in the regional league. Northern Courier reports that after years of hard work and impressive performances, the player now has the opportunity to fully concentrate on her football career.
Rita, who comes from Törpt near Schönberg, began her football journey in the boys' teams at FC Schönberg 95. At the age of 14, she gained experience at the sports school in Schwerin before returning to her homeland. Her talent was also noticed at the selection tournament in Duisburg, which ultimately led to her entry into professional football.
From Wolfsburg to St. Pölten
Her first professional contract with VfL Wolfsburg opened the doors to the second Bundesliga for her in 2018. Here, in addition to training, she worked in a gym and for a sporting goods manufacturer to stay afloat. After successfully moving to FC Carl Zeiss Jena, she finally reached St. Pölten in Austria, where she became Austrian champion three times in a row and won the national cup.
Rita also enjoyed international success, scoring a decisive goal in the 2023 Champions League group stage. She made the match the talk of the town when she scored the decisive goal in the 118th minute, catapulting her team into the next round. Their successes did not go unnoticed, and BVB became aware of them when they registered a women's team in the district league.
A new step in Dortmund
Rita has been part of Borussia Dortmund since July 1, 2025. Training starts on July 6th and she is looking forward to dedicating herself to football without having to look for a job on the side. “I thank my parents for their support,” says Rita. The connection to her family is important to her and she is ready to take on her new challenge.
BVB fans can be excited to see what the coming season brings for the talented striker. The anticipation is great and the expectations of the new player are high. Her impressive career shows that hard training and determination are always rewarded. Football is much more than just a game - it is a passion that brings people together.
Meanwhile, action in the Women’s Champions League continues to be exciting. In October 2022, Wolfsburg played against SKN St. Pölten, which demonstrated the players' abilities on the international stage. SWP reported on an exciting start and big names like DFB captain Alexandra Popp in the Wolfsburg squad. Such events demonstrate the growing popularity of women's football and help ensure that players like Rita around the world have the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
