Traditional bakery in distress: bankruptcy threatens 400 jobs in MV!
In an unexpected step, the traditional bakery Mecklenburger Backstuben GmbH from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has today filed for self-administration bankruptcy. How Mercury reported, the insolvency application was filed with the district court in Neubrandenburg. The bakery chain, which has now existed for 40 years and proudly runs over 55 branches in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Brandenburg, employs more than 400 people.
Self-administration insolvency enables company management to maintain its ability to act. This means that the branches will remain open during the process and employee salary payments will be protected by insolvency money until January. The bakery also plans not to announce any further layoffs during the insolvency proceedings, which should give many of the affected employees a sigh of relief.
Challenges and framework conditions
The reasons for the financial difficulties of the Mecklenburg bakeries are varied. Rising personnel, energy and purchasing costs are seen as a major challenge that cannot simply be passed on to customers. The increasing competitive pressure from discounters has made the situation even worse, report observers and the Farmer's newspaper.
What was particularly eye-catching was the dismissal of 50 employees from frozen food production at the beginning of the year, which already showed the first effects of the restructuring. According to reports from Norddeutscher Rundfunk, there was significant turbulence in company management in the first quarter of 2025, which contributed to the current situation.
A look at company trends
Again IFM explained, Germany experienced an increase in corporate bankruptcies in 2024, with over 21,812 cases, an increase of 22.4% compared to the previous year. This is an alarming trend that affects companies like the Mecklenburger Backstuben and shows that more and more companies are facing economic challenges.
The Mecklenburg bakeries are now striving for a strategic realignment in order to optimize cost structures, processes and liquidity planning. The aim is to put the company on a more stable basis and to secure the traditional brand, which is already very popular with the region's residents, for the future.
At a time when many companies are suffering from increasing pressure, employees and management hope that the measures can be implemented successfully. We can only hope that the Mecklenburg bakeries emerge stronger from this difficult phase.
