Witnesses saw the drunk driver's car speeding along sidewalks without lights and ramming several fences. It was a spectacular but disturbing spectacle as the woman drove in serpentine lines and also collided with a traffic sign. Things couldn't have gotten any worse until their car finally came to a stop on a school lawn. The police were alerted at 8:50 p.m. and found the driver in the driver's seat. A breath alcohol test followed immediately and the woman had to hand over her driver's license and car keys. The initial damage estimate is around 2,500 euros. She is now being investigated for endangering road traffic. This is not an isolated case, as the dangers of drunk driving continue to be a pressing issue.
But what is the general situation regarding the problem of alcohol on the roads? According to Bast.de, one in four traffic deaths in the EU died due to alcohol. As part of the EU project BASELINE, important key figures (KPIs) on drunk driving were determined in Germany. A representative survey in which over 5,000 people took part showed that 86.5 percent of car drivers did not consume alcohol before driving. Nevertheless, male and young drivers, as well as novice drivers, are particularly likely to drive under the influence of alcohol. And the concern remains: On many trips, people said they thought it was extremely unlikely that they would be tested for alcohol consumption.
