Farewell in music: Cantor Christian Wiebeck leaves Dobbertin
On Sunday a very special farewell event took place in the Dobbertin monastery church. Christian Wiebeck, the popular cantor of the “Rund um Goldberg” parish, was ceremoniously farewelled. The editors recently reported on Northern Courier about the moving moments of the farewell concert, which was organized by pastors Christian Banek and Ricardo Freiheit as well as the brass ensemble of the monastery church and the region's trombone choir. “It was a truly festive setting in which everyone involved gave their best,” said one visitor.
In addition to the symphonic sounds, solo performances also came to the fore. The soprano Nadja Schmalenberg thrilled the audience with her vocal performance. Christian Wiebeck took over the overall musical direction and played both the organ and the piano. With his compositions and his commitment, Wiebeck leaves a clear mark on the region. People will particularly remember the voicing and consecration of the monastery organ five years ago and the recommissioning of three bells in the monastery church since 2023.
The bells and their history
The acquisition of new bells has a long and eventful history. Like that Dobbertin Monastery reveals, bells were handed out during the world wars, which really hurt the community as they were seen as a sign of peace. On the way to the return of traditional sounds, the new bells, which come from a de-dedicated church in Hanover-Stöcken, were officially put into operation. The old chilled cast iron bells were remembered at an organ vespers on June 17, 2023. Christian Wiebeck played together with Pastor Christian Hasenpusch, and the event was well attended.
The new bells are an important addition and are intended to reshape the acoustic landscape of the monastery church. This is particularly important as the previous bells had a relatively short lifespan due to their material. The organ vespers not only brought back memories of the old bells, the new organ, which was inaugurated in 2023, also provides a breath of fresh air in the community's musical work.
A farewell and new horizons
For Christian Wiebeck, who came to the region in 2020, the time was marked by challenges. The corona pandemic presented the cantor with the task of continuing the musical work under special conditions. “The first few months were not easy because choir rehearsals were not possible,” says Wiebeck. Nevertheless, he managed to successfully direct both the Dobbertin-Techentin choir and the trombone choir and to organize numerous concerts. From the end of October he will go to Lower Saxony to become district cantor in the Lüchow-Dannenberg church district. However, he plans to return to the area for occasional concerts.
The application deadline for the successor to the office of cantor is until the end of October. It remains to be seen who will take on musical responsibility to keep alive the traditions that Wiebeck shaped during his time in office.
