Fraud in the district: Thousands of euros lost through fake PayPal links!
In the Ludwigslust-Parchim district, numerous PayPal users fell for a perfidious scam. Over 3,000 euros were debited from unsuspecting people using fake links and QR codes. The perpetrators posed as prospective buyers and lured their victims via online sales platforms where they offered items for sale. To process the supposed payment quickly, they sent links or QR codes to confirm the transaction. The sellers had no idea that by clicking on these links, they were unknowingly authorizing debits from their account. In all known cases, the funds were withdrawn without the consent of those affected. This is reported by MOPO.
In order to protect the livelihoods of those affected, the police immediately informed PayPal, the sales platforms used and the house banks so that possible further debits could be stopped. Given the large number of cases, PayPal itself has warned about this scam on its website and advises not to pay any suspicious invoices or requests for money.
Fraud is increasing
PayPal fraud is an increasingly common phenomenon that primarily affects online shopping and classified ads. The fraudsters use a variety of methods - from phishing emails to fake calls that supposedly come from PayPal employees. When such tricks are used, it becomes clear that user inattention is a particularly daunting problem. According to MyDealz, typical warning signs include unauthorized debits, emails with links and unsolicited requests for money. Users should therefore always be aware of their online activities and take suspected cases seriously.
The most common scams include:
Actively take protective measures
It is particularly important to protect yourself from such scams. Users are well advised not to click on any links in emails or SMS and only enter their details on the official PayPal website. The consumer protection site also recommends activating two-factor authentication and checking all transactions regularly. If fraud is suspected, you should report it to PayPal, block the account and report it to the police.
A healthy distrust can help protect yourself from fraudsters. Avoid complying with unusual requests and be particularly wary of offers that sound too good to be true. Stay vigilant and protect your finances!
