Heat warning for NRW: Up to 33 degrees and thunderstorms at the weekend!

On June 14, 2025, the German Weather Service reports a serious heat warning for most regions in North Rhine-Westphalia. From 11 a.m. on Friday, the heat is described as not just unpleasant, but extremely stressful, especially for older people and those in need of care. This first short heat wave of the year brings temperatures of up to 33 degrees and lasts until Friday evening at 7 p.m. Anyone who prepares for this should also think about adequate protection to prevent health risks.

It will be particularly critical if thunderstorms appear on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands on Friday evening. However, these mainly bring a certain relief, as the following Saturday will be characterized by strong thunderstorms, heavy rain and even hail. The DWD informs that the heat warning will be extended to almost all municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia from 11 a.m. on Saturday. In the east of North Rhine-Westphalia, however, the storms are not expected until the evening. So it's important to prepare well in advance for the upcoming unpredictable weather.

Heat waves and health risks

In recent years, the frequency of heat waves in Germany has increased significantly, a trend that, according to the Federal Environment Agency, is increasingly being influenced by climate change. It is an alarming sign that there has not been a year without heat warnings since 2005. Eight of the ten warmest summers since 1881 have been recorded in the last 30 years, making it clear that we are in a critical climate state.

The dangers of extreme heat should not be underestimated. Particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, the homeless or the chronically ill are excessively burdened by the effects. This can lead to existing health problems becoming worse and even increasing the number of heat deaths. To counteract these threatening developments, the federal government is planning a series of measures to reduce heat-related illnesses and deaths. As part of the Climate Adaptation Act, which has been in force since July 1, 2024, municipal climate adaptation concepts are required, among other things, in order to be better prepared for such heat periods.

Prevention and awareness

The internet portal wärmewarning.nrw.de offers important information and materials on the heat warning. It makes it easier to access preventative measures that can be implemented in nursing homes or kindergartens, among others. The Federal Environment Agency has also launched initiatives to support mayors with information packages on heat protection and to raise awareness among the population.

Cities like Mannheim and Dortmund have already developed their own heat action plans that can serve as a model. In the current situation, it is essential to take structural measures to prevent heat. These include, for example, greening facades or planting trees that can provide shade and improve the microclimate. This not only creates a more pleasant living environment, but also actively contributes to reducing high temperatures.

Overall, it is important to take the warnings seriously and prepare for the heat wave in good time. Find out what weather conditions to expect and stay well hydrated and protected, especially in the coming days.
