Youth Theater in Parchim: Only Freedom” inspires on July 19th!

In less than three days, the Parchim theater hall will become the stage for the exciting play “Only Freedom”, which was put on by the 11th grade of the Goethe-Gymnasium Schwerin. The performance will take place on July 19th at 5 p.m. and is characterized by an exciting mix of our own creativity and borrowings from Friedrich Schiller's “The Robbers”. This in-house production could turn out to be a real crowd-pleaser because it deals with burning topics such as classism, gender and identity. A report from Nordkurier already describes the challenges that the preparation brought with it. Rehearsals under difficult conditions, such as insulting classmates and disruptions caused by a party in the next room, were the order of the day.

But the team, consisting of committed students, did not let themselves be defeated. The theater group worked on this project for over a year. Essentially, this group, which was initially active in the working group area, now plays in the upper school basic course and deals intensively with their own biographies and family stories. The topics from her research and writing project were deemed too private for the school stage, but too important to be discarded completely. This led to a unique connection between the personal stories and the elements of Schiller's work. The Berliner Festspiele stand highlights how the piece has developed its own narrative, consisting of student texts, Schiller fragments and moving comments.

Special challenges and talents

The last rehearsal before the performance brought additional challenges, as 17-year-old Richard W. spontaneously stepped in to recast a role. This shows the great commitment of the students and their teacher Anne-Kathrin Holz, who has 34 years of experience in the theater. Your guidance is crucial to guiding students through the emotional and artistic swings.

The actors are a colorful duo, complemented by Enya R., who plays various roles as a long-time member of the theater group. Her acting skills could hold the key to conveying the play's complex themes in a sensitive way.

Culture with social relevance

In times when identity and gender issues are more in focus than ever, it becomes clear how important such productions are for young people. The theater has developed into a space in which queerness and questions of identity are dealt with, as described on [Nachtkritik](https://nachtkritik.de/recherche-debatte/gender-und-indentitaetsfragen-wie-queere-themen-das-theater-fuer-junges-publikum- enrichen). Queer topics have increasingly moved from the margins to the center of children's and youth theater. The controversial issues are discussed in a protected environment and offer young people the opportunity to find and strengthen their own voices.

Those interested in theater have the option of purchasing a combination ticket for both performances for 15 euros. Registrations can be made by phone on 03871 6291 141 or by email to [email protected]. The Goethe-Gymnasium Schwerin and the Junge Staatstheater Parchim cordially invite everyone to join them on this journey to freedom and to be inspired.
