School starts in Parchim: Finally stay cool – no more heat!

On Monday, September 8, 2025, the “Johann Wolfgang von Goethe” regional school in Parchim celebrated its first day of school with a colorful party. Around 375 students flocked to the newly constructed building, which replaces the old school location and was built on land that was formerly used for military purposes in the regimental suburb. Headmaster Peter-Michael Dreeser and Mayor Dirk Flörke welcomed the students, who greeted the headmaster with a warm “good morning”. An emotional moment that marks the beginning of a new era.

The school, which is considered the largest construction project in Parchim's history, was ceremoniously opened on July 4, 2025. A total of 26.9 million euros were invested in the new building, with more than 14.1 million euros coming from subsidies. A symbolic groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 14, 2022, followed by a topping-out ceremony in March 2023. This time was not only marked by the redesign of the school building, but also by challenges such as the corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine. The students can now look forward to modern learning conditions, which are supported by digital boards, special specialist rooms and a large school kitchen.

Modern and future-proof

The new school is not only an architectural highlight, but also an example of sustainable and future-proof construction. The building has four floors and offers space for up to 400 students. The equipment ensures a flexible and barrier-free learning environment. With a bright atrium as the central event location and an outdoor area designed with seating elements, a football field and green areas, the school creates an ideal setting for creative learning and social interaction.

A special highlight was the children's entertainment on the first day of school. Students enjoyed free cotton candy and slushy while exploring the new classrooms and school grounds. Teacher Kirsten Neumann actively participated in the activities and reflected on the developmental progress of her students. The 10th grade, represented by student Oscar Geerts, expressed enthusiasm about the modern conditions and the fantastic new opportunities.

School diversity and future orientation

The new building also resolves the challenges of the old one. The old location struggled with space capacity problems, but these are now history. The concept of the new school is based on contemporary educational ideals: the focus is on active learning, individuality of the learners and the integration of movement and social interaction. The flexible room concepts are designed to enable a variety of activities and thus accommodate contemporary learning. This is in line with the goals of modern school architecture, which aims to create a space for health, exercise and community, as emphasized by the Schulbau Open Source initiative.

Overall, the first day of school was a complete success and a sign of the collective achievements of everyone involved who made the new building possible despite adverse circumstances. The path to the future has been taken with joy and enthusiasm that can be felt in each of the new classrooms.
