130 years of the Red School: Celebration of the school birthday in Strasburg!

In Strasburg, the Red School is celebrating a remarkable anniversary: 130 years of teaching and educational history. The neo-Gothic building, which is a listed building, was opened on September 29, 1895 and has had an eventful history ever since. The school principal Britta Fredrich is particularly looking forward to the upcoming festival and invites parents, grandparents and everyone interested to an open day, which begins on Saturday, October 11th, from 9 a.m. The school's past and current projects can be admired here, with the rooms being open until 12 p.m.

The striking building, built by master builder Georg Döring, can be found in the northern area of the historic city center and has undergone many changes over the years, including the conversion from an elementary school to a central school II after the Second World War. From 1953 the Red School operated again as a primary school. In addition, the school has had different names over the course of its existence - it was named after the artist Käthe Kollwitz and later after Artur Becker, among others.

Insights into the past

The day of celebration will not only be marked by musical contributions that begin at 9 a.m. in the auditorium, but also by an exciting presentation by Roland Brauchler, a former teacher, who will discuss the eventful history of the Red School at 10:30 a.m. During this time, guests will have the opportunity to discover the school's history from the first enrollment, which included 569 girls and 541 boys in 16 classes, to the structural developments.

The school building itself impresses with its architectural design: with a tower-like porch and numerous pointed arch-shaped windows, it is an important testimony to the architecture of its time. The special features of the three-story building, such as the brick cross in the gable and the centrally placed tower clock, invite you to visit and are a real eye-catcher in the city.

The place in today's society

The Red School not only has historical significance, but also plays a central role in today's educational landscape. The developments in German school history, which are documented as part of extensive research projects, reflect the constant adaptation to social, political and educational changes. A comprehensive publication on this topic offers a detailed overview of school education and the development of teaching subjects, which also affects the Red School. The background and processes are comprehensively covered here in order to provide a deep insight into the subject matter. You can find out more about this in Gert Geißler's work, which is now in its third, updated edition.

The Red School and its history are not just a look back into the past, they are also a sign of change and development in the educational landscape. In its 130-year history, the school has overcome the challenges of time and remains an important part of the Strasburg community.
