Pasewalk becomes a center for hydrogen: 300 million euros for the future!
The industrial city of Pasewalk is taking a big step into the future of renewable energies. By signing a purchase agreement for a 6.5 hectare property in the Berlin-Szczecin Industrial Park, just outside Pasewalk, the Enertrag company has laid the foundation for a pioneering hydrogen project. The project aims to create one of the first hydrogen plants in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and will be connected to the German hydrogen core network.
Investments and expansion plans
In the first expansion stage, an electrolysis output of 60 megawatts is planned. This will make it possible to produce around 6,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually – definitely an announcement in the region. Enertrag plans to invest up to 300 million euros in this location and even has a plan for a possible future expansion to 180 megawatts. “There's something going on,” said a company representative, commenting on the ambitious plans. The technical planning should take place this year, while the approval documents should be submitted in the first half of next year.
Keeping nature in mind
An important point in the implementation of the project is the nature conservation measures. A reptile protection fence is already planned for 2025 so that the local flora and fauna do not suffer during construction work. The aim is to start construction in 2027, with commissioning by 2029. Enertrag requires various permits, including pollution control, nature conservation and fire protection, which represents an exciting challenge.
Hydrogen: building block of the European energy transition
But what does this project mean for the region and beyond? Pasewalk is part of the “doing hydrogen” joint project, which plays a key role within the electrolysis corridor in East Germany. This project is part of the IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) funding program approved by the European Commission. With the approval of the third wave of projects, the EU has taken a further step towards improving hydrogen supplies and reducing dependence on natural gas.
Various EU member states, including Germany, France and Italy, are supporting this project with up to 6.9 billion euros in public funds. “This is a really big step,” say project engineers and experts who are helping to build a stable hydrogen infrastructure in the federal states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. This step is crucial to achieve the goals of the European Green Deal and the REPowerEU plan.
A good team behind the project
The hydrogen plant Pasewalk GmbH & Co KG, which was founded in 2024, is managed by Enertrag, a company that has 25 years of experience in the industry and employs over 1,200 people. With a strong team and a clear vision, the course for the development of a sustainable hydrogen economy in the region could be optimally set.
The coming years promise to be exciting – for Pasewalk and the entire region. Anyone who works in the hydrogen economy or has an ear for the latest developments will definitely have their finger on the pulse here.
