Polzow celebrates 650 years: A festival full of history and community!

On June 29, 2025, the small but vital community of Polzow celebrated its 650th anniversary with a colorful program that focused on the history and community of the place. As the SVZ reported, the celebrations included a festive church service, a lively procession and an evening celebration that brought citizens and guests together.

The geographical location of Polzow is remarkable: Located east of Pasewalk and near federal highway 104, the place is part of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and has around 250 to 261 inhabitants, as various statistics show. Thanks to the good transport connections, residents can easily reach both the state capital Schwerin and the metropolises of Berlin and Stettin, even if the latter is of course closer.

Celebrations and community life

Back to the anniversary: The colorful parade required the busy federal highway to be closed for a short time in order to enable all watching groups to properly enjoy the spectacle. An exhibition also offered insights into the chronicle of the former estate village, which made the hearts of those present beat faster. Various local groups - including the fire department, the football club and a nationally known riding club - presented themselves and contributed to the happy atmosphere.

But Polzow's history goes back a long way. The place was first mentioned in documents in 1375 and belonged to Prussia and the Uckermark Brandenburg for more than 500 years. A drastic event in history was the insolvency of the Polzow estate in 1934, which led to the estate being distributed to 16 farming families. The period after the Second World War was marked by land reform, which, however, did not result in any expropriations in the original village. In addition, the established LPG Type I “Sonne”, which existed until 1980, was an important part of the lives of the residents.

Demographics and infrastructure

Polzow covers an area of 8.51 km² and has a population density of around 30.67 inhabitants per square kilometer. The town is home to a large number of residential buildings, almost exclusively single-family homes. In the election polls, Mayor Daniel Kowalk, who is supported by the “Friends of the Polzow Fire Department”, represented a leading role in the municipality, which has a mayoral representation of six members. The political stability and commitment of citizens are reflected in the municipal administration, which is based in Pasewalk.

As far as tourism activities are concerned, it can be said that there are currently no accommodation options in Polzow, which is why the municipality is more of a place for daily life than a tourist destination. But this does not diminish the appeal of the charming village, which, with its rich history and lively community, shows a new face every weekend.

Overall, one can say that the celebrations for Polzow's 650th anniversary were not only a celebration of the past, but also a living testimony to the future of this fascinating community, which, surrounded by beautiful nature and traditional agriculture, continues to occupy an important place in the heart of Western Pomerania.
