Ultramarathon through the Uckermark: Sports legend lives on!
Bansin, Deutschland - On July 5, 2025, six cycling enthusiasts from the Uckermark ventured to a sporty adventure that is reminiscent of promoting endurance sports by the late Sporticone Lutz Finger. The legendary tour, known as the ultramarathon, took place for the 27th time and comprises impressive 330 kilometers. The cycling fans of TSV Blau-Weiß 65 Schwedt/O continue the tradition that Lutz has launched Finger, and thus keep his memory up.
The group set off from the water sports center in Schwedt/O at 3 a.m. Eckhard Kurth, who completed this tour for the 20th time, traveled together with Axel Dittmar, Martin Schröder, Sven Krummholz and Sven Zimman. Florian Merten joined a little later. The average age of the group was 58 years old, which is not necessarily indifferent to young people, but on experienced athletes who know how to master such challenges.
from Schwedt to Bansin and back
The first stop was in Friedland after 100 kilometers, where the group treated itself to a strengthening breakfast. At 7:50 a.m. they crossed the Zecererer Brücke and continued their journey to Usedom. Thanks to the cheap wind conditions and a manageable flow of traffic, the route became easier than expected. At 8:35 a.m., the group reached the beach promenade in Bansin - an hour earlier than in previous years. Here, however, the fish snack on the promenade was still closed, which gave the hungry cyclists another educational break.
The return trip started at 10:15 a.m., while a short rain shower caused an additional challenge. Two tire breakdowns on a gravel forest path demanded team spirit and skill. Fortunately, there was an accompanying vehicle that helped to remedy the damage. After another rest in Friedland, the group quickly laid out the rest of the route, which also contributed to the cheap winds.
The entire tour decided the group after impressive 332 kilometers traveled back at 4:30 p.m. The cut was over 33 km/h, and a total of 1780 meters of altitude were overcome. "A terrific day for us cyclists," said Kurth after returning.
annual tradition and success
This bike tour is part of a long tradition that led to another edition of the Marathon Cycling Schwedt-Bansin-Schwedt last June. Even during this event, nine participants, including a woman, met in Bansin after reaching the promenade in front of the beach clock. Some took the opportunity to cool off in the Baltic Sea, while others strengthened themselves with regional specialties such as fish rolls and cyclists.
The Oderstädter's cycling season has now started; It started in mid -March with a tour from Berlin to Schwedt. The 24th Bansin trip was just one of many events in the annual calendar of TSV Schwedt. The number of ultra runners in Germany also shows that such endurance sports not only demand extraordinary performance, but also inspire more and more people. The additional social aspect of exchanging experiences at barbecues after the tours makes these events particularly valuable, as we see at TSV.
The world of the ultra run has changed in recent years with a decline in the number of participants in Germany. In 2022, around 9,804 active ultra runners reported - older age groups often represent the larger shares. Even if the numbers fluctuate, they show what a great interest in endurance sports, be it in running or cycling, as the ultramarathon in the Uckermark shows.
This is to be noted: The sports enthusiasts in the Uckermark not only ensure sporting challenges, but also maintain the memory of a sports legend and promote the community spirit in cycling.
