Trains stand still: Fire near Bernau causes massive delays!
Once again, a disruption in Deutsche Bahn's long-distance transport is causing significant problems for travelers. The train line near Bernau is currently affected, where a fire near the tracks in the Barnim district, Brandenburg, caused massive cable damage on Monday evening. The repair work is expected to last until the evening hours, as Deutsche Bahn states in a recent announcement. What started as a harmless outage is turning into a long-term nuisance for commuters and travelers.
The affected train connections include, among others, ICE line 21, which runs from the Baltic Sea resort of Binz to Berlin, as well as individual trains on lines 15 and 28, which travel to Frankfurt am Main and Munich respectively. The connection between Berlin and Eberswalde also runs through the disruption hotspot and is being rerouted. The stops in Bernau, Eberswalde, Angermünde, Prenzlau, Pasewalk, Anklam, Züssow and Greifswald are canceled. However, a replacement stop in Neustrelitz was set up to accommodate travelers. Travelers must also expect delays of up to 20 minutes, according to Süddeutsche.de.
Unclear background of the fire
The exact causes of the fire are still unclear. However, previous incidents have been suspected to have a political background. There was recently a similar incident in Berlin in which activists claimed responsibility in a letter and classified the sabotage as a targeted attack on Deutsche Bahn and Tesla. The State Security Office of the State Criminal Police Office in Berlin has already initiated investigations to clarify possible political motives, as Tagesspiegel reports.
These uncertainties remind us that not only technical defects, but also deliberate destruction can massively disrupt the smooth flow of traffic. Deutsche Bahn is required to react quickly in order to ensure normal operations for passengers again. Customers planning to travel on regional rail lines RE2, RE7, RB 21 and RB 23 should also expect restrictions and possible cancellations, which could cause further frustration. So far, however, the disruption has been concentrated on the aforementioned long-distance traffic, but the situation should be monitored closely, as rbb24 reports.
It is to be hoped that the repair work will progress quickly in the coming hours and that train connections will soon be stabilized again. For many commuters, the only thing left is the uncertainty and the associated stress, which is always high, even early in the morning. Stay patient and continue to plan your trips wisely!
