Low German Day in Malchow: Old school meets lively culture!
A very special pensioners' day took place in Malchow today, September 29, 2025, and there was a lot to experience! Traditional Low German lessons were held in an old classroom. The program included activities such as reading, arithmetic, singing and even writing in Sütterlin script. The teacher was full of enthusiasm and informed the participants about the valuable efforts to preserve the Low German language, which is still very important in northern Germany. There was also a lot of laughter, while the distribution of certificates was a special highlight of the day for the participants BDK reported.
After this educational lesson, we continued on to a tour of the “Kiek in und wunner di” museum, which featured curious everyday objects: from a fold-out bathtub and a mobile water toilet to a balance bike and an old dentist's office. Such exhibits bring back memories of a time that was not only nostalgic but also highly informative. The museum, which is housed in the former Malchow film palace, was opened in 1999 and offers an exciting insight into everyday GDR history, as can be seen on the website Island town of Malchow can be read.
Culture and music in the monastery
We continued with a walk through the grounds of a former monastery, which later served as a monastery for noble ladies. Here the participants experienced an impressive organ concert in the monastery church. Five organs, including the Friese organ and several Sauer organs, provided half an hour of musical delight. This unique performance by former monastery residents left a lasting impression.
After the cultural program, Malchow's famous cuisine awaited the visitors. There were numerous opportunities for exchange and personal reminiscence over a lunch primarily known for its fish dishes. In sunny weather, which defied all forecasts, the participants ended the day with a visit to the GDR Everyday Museum. There, visitors were able to discover memorabilia such as old kitchen appliances, office utensils and toys, which made many participants smile, as they still use some of these devices such as the RG 28 mixer or the electric coffee grinder today.
Low German language in focus
A central point of the day was the Low German language, which plays a vital role in the region and is taught in many schools in the north. The language not only has historical significance, but is also actively used in everyday life. The NDR highlights the importance of Low German as part of North German identity. The day dedicated to Low German culture helps to create a deeper appreciation for this special language and promote community.
The pensioners' day in Malchow not only offered a journey through time through history and culture, but also a valuable opportunity to celebrate and preserve the Low German language. A successful event that enriched everyone present!
