Maritime evening: high culture meets shanty in the Warnemünder song evening!
In Rostock, culture lovers can expect a special event that combines maritime songs with opera and shanties. An exciting song evening entitled “The Sea in Opera, Song and Shanty” will premiere on November 16, 2025 in the Little Comedy Warnemünde. The helmsman Nenad Smigoc, who takes over the moderation between the musical pieces, describes the event as a journey through the high culture of sea shanties, enriched with poetic program contributions.
The program, directed by Stephan Knies, includes a diverse selection of music. These include works by important composers such as Franz Schubert, Richard Wagner, Robert Schumann and Edward Elgar. With a cleverly chosen contrast between the typical sailor clichés and sophisticated music, the ensemble ensures a lively performance. The ship's pianist Piet (Danyil Ilkiv) provides the musical accompaniment together with Hein (Tobias Völklein), Klaas (Jaehwan Shim), Fietje (Emelie Kroon) and the guest Smutje (Gustav Marx).
A touch of Wagner
The combination of maritime music and high cultural standards also includes Wagner's opera “The Flying Dutchman”. This opera, which premiered in 1843 at the Royal Court Theater in Dresden, deals with redemption through love. It tells the dramatic story of a cursed captain who courts the hand of Daland's daughter Senta, who can free him from his curse through her loyalty. Wagner's impressive composition, enriched with leitmotifs and emotional depth, represents another cultural highlight and brings the spirit of the sea into the evening's program.
In addition to the opera, the repertoire will also include well-known shanties such as “Drunken Sailor” and the catchy tune “Auf der Reeperbahn at night at half past twelve”. These pieces bring the maritime tradition to life and show how deeply rooted the influence of seafaring is in music.
Unique atmospheres
It will also be exciting to include excerpts from Goethe's “Italian Journey”, which will further enrich the evening. The next performance will take place on November 26th at 8 p.m., and expectations are already high that this song evening will not only expand the musical repertoire, but also embody the soul of the Baltic Sea in an impressive way.
The backdrop directly on the Baltic Sea also makes the experience unforgettable. It is a festival for everyone who appreciates the maritime spirit and the high culture of music - an event that should not be missed.
