New training course for tour guides: We make Rostock enthusiastic!

Rostock has a lot to offer - almost 800,000 visitors captivate the city every year. From the picturesque Warnemünde Beach to the green coastal forests and exciting history, a wide range of experiences are on offer here. In order to bring this multifaceted diversity closer to the guests, the Rostock & Warnemünde Tourism Office on November 7, 2025 a new training course for guest guides. This is done in close cooperation with the Rostock city guide association.

The training is not only an important step for future tour guides, but also a sign of how valuable and necessary this appointment is for the city's reputation. Matthias Fromm, Rostock's tourism director, emphasizes the importance of the tour guides for the city's image. Your ability to convey history and culture in a vivid way is essential and makes a good tour guide.

A new training course with a special highlight

The new course takes place every 14 days and ends with an exam scheduled for April 24th and 25th, 2026. Klaus Walter, a former journalist and active as a tour guide since 2023, expresses his enthusiasm about the training. He believes that the program aims not only to impart knowledge, but also to ignite passion for the city.

The participants should be sociable, reliable and able to speak German. No previous knowledge is required, which makes the training particularly accessible. The cost is 495 euros and includes a specialist book on the city's history as well as a one-year membership in the Rostock City Guide Association. In addition, a free place will be raffled off among the applicants, which should create additional motivation.

The importance of training and quality

But why is sound training so important? The profession of tour guide is not protected in Germany, and the quality of the tours depends heavily on training. Therefore it sits down BVGD (Federal Association of Tour Guides in Germany e.V.) actively promotes the creation of a protected professional profile. The training is subject to high standards, is based on DIN EN 15565 and follows the BVGD guidelines. These standards are crucial for establishing a uniform, high-quality training standard throughout Germany.

The training is divided into three stages, starting with the basic training based on the BVGD guidelines, which covers a wide range of topics. These well-founded qualifications are not only beneficial for the leaders themselves, but also for the guests, who benefit from competent knowledge and good presentation.

Network and exchange for tour guides

For those who work as tour guides in their professional lives, there is an annual platform for further development. The German tour guide conference (DGFT) offers an opportunity for professional exchange and networking. Here, around 7,600 members discuss current topics and trends that affect the profession. Such events are important for ongoing training and making new contacts.
