New after-school care center big and small” opens: 300 places for Rostock children!
Today the new after-school center “Big and Small” in Taklerring 45, Groß Klein, Rostock was ceremoniously handed over. The AWO-Social Service Rostock gGmbH is now taking over the ownership of this modern building, which was realized with investments of around 7.2 million euros. This is an important step for families in the region, because the new building creates over 300 after-school care places for the students of the “Am Taklerring” primary school and replaces the previous container system, which has served as a temporary solution since 2021. Municipal initiatives such as these are a response to the increasing need for after-school care places and the future legal requirements that provide for a legal right to after-school care.
Mayor Eva-Maria Kröger, who took part in the handover ceremony, highlighted the significant relief for families and emphasized the improvement in care conditions. “The after-school care center is a wonderful community place,” said operations manager Sigrid Hecht, emphasizing the after-school care center’s role as an important base for social participation and educational support.
Modern and multifunctional
The building itself impresses with its well thought-out design. It is barrier-free and has an elevator, making it accessible to all children, regardless of their needs. The central entrance areas are spacious and have large skylights that create an inviting place to stay, while the spacious ground floor rooms can also be used for teaching. There is also a parent-child room that invites you to do activities together.
Another highlight is the multifunctional dining room with a serving kitchen, which can also be used for events in the district. These spatial concepts are not only practical, but also promote community and exchange within the neighborhood. The state funding for this educational institution reflects the role of the after-school care center, which was designed as a family-complementary and supportive day care facility for school children between the ages of six and 14. It pursues a clear educational, upbringing and care mission.
A place for the future
The planning and construction of the after-school care center was carried out by the planning office aib bauplanung, and the construction period extended from 2023 to 2025. Before the new building, the container system, which had meanwhile served as a temporary solution, had to be accommodated in the scaffolding ring. The new after-school care center is now a sustainable building that not only meets current needs, but can also meet future challenges.
With regard to social participation and educational offerings in the city, this new building is a further step towards giving all children the best possible development and educational opportunities. Particularly in times when the demands on balancing family and work are increasing, well-structured and high-quality after-school care is essential.
