Rostock welcomes Scanhotels: Radisson rating causes controversy!
Something is currently happening in the hotel sector in Rostock: the once well-known Radisson Blu Hotel will in future operate under the name Scanhotels City. Under the leadership of Friedemann Kunz, an entrepreneur from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, this renaming is carried out out of the desire for more individuality and independence. The decision to remove the Radisson logo from the facade has already been implemented, and official marketing activities for the new Scanhotels started on July 16, 2025. From this point on, the adapted rooms can also be booked online, like Northern Courier reported.
But the separation from the Radisson Hotel Group was not without problems. This considers the termination of the management contracts to be ineffective and is planning legal action. Loud Day ticket Radisson shut down all central systems for the hotel on July 11th. The local team in Rostock had to face these challenges and is now taking responsibility for smooth operations under the new name.
Expansion in the hotel sector
The renaming not only brings with it a fresh name, but also sets an accent in Rostock's hotel landscape. The new Scanhotels Stadthafen building, which is scheduled to open in late summer, will, together with Scanhotels City, form the largest hotel provider in Rostock. Together, both hotels offer around 446 rooms and around 1,000 beds. There is also plenty of space for relaxing and meeting with over 2,000 square meters of event space, including three restaurants, three bars and a SPA area. The project has an impressive investment volume of over 90 million euros, as well Northern Courier reported.
Friedemann Kunz not only operates hotels in Rostock, but already has a number of hotels in Germany and Albania under the umbrella of his Friedemann Kunz Foundation, which manages the group of companies. The foundation has set itself the goal of promoting innovative and individual hotel concepts, which is reflected not least in the founding of the Scanhotels brand.
Market development and future prospects
The hotel industry continues to be an attractive area for investment in Germany and Austria. The new Scanhotels brand joins a market that is considered an innovation laboratory for innovative hotel concepts. Despite challenges such as the pandemic and geopolitical tensions, the hotel real estate market is holding up. Friedemann Kunz and his foundation are positioning themselves well strategically - the Scanhotels could soon expand beyond Rostock, which is considered quite possible in the industry.
The future Scanhotels Stadthafen will not only attract guests from Rostock, but could also serve as a location for offices and restaurants. This opens a new chapter in Rostock's hospitality history - and that promises interesting development opportunities. While the renovation work and legal questions are still pending, it remains to be seen how competition will develop in the region. Above all, the combination of individual service and a wide range of leisure activities could give the new hotels a competitive advantage.
The Frobenius-Kunz family sees positive developments in the hospitality segment with a total of nine hotel properties in Europe that they already operate. Around 150 million euros were generated in 2024 - a remarkable figure that shows that a good hand was at work here and the signs of the times were recognized.
