Rostock rocks: foundation stone laid for modern city district on Kesselborn!

A new chapter in urban development has opened at Kesselborn in Rostock. On September 26, 2025, the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone took place for an ambitious construction project that extends directly next to the main train station. In the coming years, future-oriented buildings will be built here that will have a lasting impact on the cityscape. The occasion was particularly festive as the laying of the foundation stone fell on the 200th anniversary of the founding of OstseeSparkasse Rostock. Reason enough for Mayor Kröger to anchor a document box as part of the foundation that documents the history of the financial institution. The savings bank was founded exactly 200 years ago by the merchant Friedrich Eggers and is still an integral part of Rostock life today. But things get really interesting when you take a look at the plans.

Extensive construction projects are planned on the Kesselborn site. OstseeSparkasse will not only build its new headquarters here, but also create a variety of facilities. These include a sports arena, a daycare center, a parking garage as well as apartments and restaurants. These construction projects are scheduled to be completed by 2030 and will be financed by OSPA. The first planning for the area began in 2017.

A new district is taking shape

But that's not all! There is also a lot of digging going on at the Werftdreieck in Rostock as part of another significant project. Wiro is planning a model district with around 700 new apartments for over 200 million euros. This shows that Rostock is on the way to becoming a modern and attractive city in which residents and visitors can feel comfortable.

The largest high-rise building in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is also being planned on the Kesselborn front. At 80 meters high, it will not only stand out visually, but will also have some exciting uses. A hotel, restaurants and offices are planned here. Construction work on the high-rise is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026, with the opening planned for 2028. A highlight will be the design hotel “Tribe” with a sky bar, from which you have a breathtaking view of the Baltic Sea.

The future of Rostock

But the construction of a parking garage with 650 parking spaces is also planned for Kesselborn, with completion scheduled for 2027. Schools are of course essential for a lively district. A three-field hall for school sports is planned as a training center for the Rostock Seawolves as well as a food market and various gastronomic offerings.

With these ambitious projects, the city of Rostock has one goal in mind: the orderly development of the cityscape and public spaces. The focus of urban design is on a wide variety of areas that are to be specifically renovated and redesigned. Citizens can take part in this important urban renewal in various ways and contribute their ideas and wishes to make Rostock even more livable.

Whether at Kesselborn or in the Werftdreieck, there is a clear concept and a large budget in place to give urban development a boost. The first steps have been taken and the people of Rostock can look forward to seeing how their city will develop in the coming years. Overall, the projects are expected to be completed by 2029/30, which only increases the anticipation for these new urban districts.

Through these construction projects, the Rostock location will further establish itself as a modern and livable center. It will be interesting to see what architectural highlights and innovative concepts will be realized here in the next few years. The future has already begun for Rostock!
