Rostock's insider tip: sawdust cake and mourning café in the Café am Pavillon”!

In Rostock, a small, charming café has attracted a lot of attention. The “Café am Pavillon”, run by 26-year-old Christin Liebscher and 53-year-old Manuela Rettig, has attracted numerous guests since it opened at the beginning of this year. The two women realized their dream of self-employment and created an inviting place to stay in their café opposite the New Cemetery at Satower Straße 132.

The concept of the café is based on the idea that the place is not only suitable for enjoying cake and coffee, but also for reflection and mourning. Not only are cakes baked fresh every day and up to ten different sheet cakes available, but also individual funeral services for small groups of up to 15 people. Particularly noteworthy is the sawdust cake, the most popular piece that cannot be found anywhere else in this form. Christin herself emphasizes the hard work involved in running the business and the gratitude of her guests.

A taste experience and new opening hours

With a clear focus on regional products, such as honey from a beekeeper in the garden city, quality is very important here. To make the visit even more palatable for guests, the café now also offers four breakfast options. It is important to the operators that the coffee is freshly brewed and does not come from machines. From November, the “Café am Pavillon” will change its opening times: It will be open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with rest days scheduled on Sundays and Mondays.

The women draw on their experience from previous jobs in various bakeries and therefore have a good handle on what the guests might want. The location, which previously served as a bakery and undertaker, now contributes to a new, lively atmosphere that also gives the sad moments a stylish setting.

A thriving concept in a special location

Another example of successful café concepts can be found abroad: the Canadian chain Second Cup is planning to set up shop in Mauritania and will soon be opening a new café at a central location. This expansion shows how important good ideas are in the café sector worldwide. Second Cup was founded in 1975 and has since established over 180 branches in 22 countries by relying on high-quality coffee and carefully prepared food. Such concepts reinforce the potential that also exists in small cafés in Germany.

All in all, the “Café am Pavillon” shows that with passion and a clear concept, not only delicious treats can be created, but also a social meeting place for the community. Christin Liebscher and Manuela Rettig are proof that gastronomy is often about much more than just serving food - it's about a very special experience.
