U21 start in the Ostseestadion: Di Salvo returns to Rostock!
A very special day is coming: On September 9, 2025, the German U21 national soccer team will begin its European Championship qualification in the Ostseestadion in Rostock. Fans can look forward to an exciting duel against Latvia, which kicks off at 8:30 p.m. Antonio Di Salvo, coach of the U21 and himself a former Hansa Rostock player, is particularly motivated. “It's a very special game for me,” said Di Salvo, who played for Rostock from 2001 to 2006 and played 120 games and scored 25 goals. His return to such a familiar venue brings back nostalgic memories.
This new beginning is being shaped by a greatly changed squad. After winning the European Championship runner-up title in 2023, 16 of 23 players have exceeded the average age and have to give way. Only seven players who were born after January 1, 2004 are still allowed to play: Paul Wanner, Nicolo Tresoldi, Nelson Weiper, Nnamdi Collins, Brajan Gruda, Elias Baum and Lukas Ullrich. It remains to be seen how the new faces will fare.
Advance ticket sales begin
This is also a great opportunity for Rostock fans to support their team. Advance ticket sales start on July 14, 2025 at 10 a.m. in the DFB ticket portal. So you can already look forward to seeing the young talents live and enjoying the atmosphere in the Ostseestadion. Di Salvo and his team are hoping for full ranks and loud support to start qualifying right from the start.
A look into the future shows that the U21 team will also face teams such as Greece, Northern Ireland, Malta and Georgia in their group. The next opportunity to see the squad in a home game is on October 10, 2025 in Jena against Greece and on November 14, 2025 in Fürth against Malta. Excitement is guaranteed!
The return to the old roots
Di Salvo, who played at Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich during his career, has positive memories of Rostock, which makes his return all the more emotional. “I expect great support from the fans,” he said optimistically about the games in his old hometown. The last games of the DFB teams in the Ostseestadion go back to the women, who won 4-1 in a European Championship qualifier against Poland in 2022. But the men were also active here - the last encounter was against Georgia in 2006 and ended with a clear 2-0 win.
On September 9th the time has finally come: the U21s will play in the Ostseestadion and the fans shouldn't miss this spectacle. A new vintage, a breath of fresh air and the opportunity to make history – these are the ingredients that give hope for exciting football evenings.
