Frontal crash on B96: Three injured after accident in Sassnitz!
Yesterday there was a dramatic traffic accident on the B96 in Sassnitz that left several people injured. According to a report in the Ostsee-Zeitung, the head-on collision occurred near a Shell gas station around 2:45 p.m. A 38-year-old driver of a passenger car lost control of his vehicle while entering the federal highway. He raced into oncoming traffic at high speed with squealing tires and collided head-on with a van driven by a 45-year-old man.
Both drivers suffered serious, but fortunately not life-threatening, injuries in the crash. The 30-year-old passenger of the van was able to escape with minor injuries. All those involved were taken to the clinic in Stralsund to be treated there. The volunteer fire department was deployed to secure the scene of the accident as fuel was leaking from both vehicles. Both vehicles were no longer drivable after the collision and had to be towed away. The total damage is estimated at around 15,000 euros. The B96 was completely closed for approximately 90 minutes to allow for the accident investigation and clean-up work. A case was opened against the BMW driver on suspicion of endangering road traffic and his driver's license was confiscated.
This isn't the first time the B96 has experienced something like this. A similar accident made a 19-year-old driver sit up and take notice on February 14 near the same route. She also lost control of her car in a right-hand bend and collided head-on with a car driven by a 56-year-old lady. Both women were seriously injured and taken to hospital; the property damage amounts to around 30,000 euros. Although the exact cause of the accident remained unclear at the time, the B96 was also briefly closed.
Accidents on the roads remain a major issue, which is also recorded in the statistics of the Federal Statistical Office. High numbers of traffic accidents are repeatedly reported nationwide, which reinforces the need to further increase traffic safety and provide information. Situations like the one in Sassnitz remind us to drive carefully and always reflect on our own behavior in traffic.
This is of course a difficult time for the injured and their families. Best wishes for a speedy recovery are definitely in order here.
