Baltic Sea water levels are exploding: Beware of new storm surges!

On October 7, 2025, the water levels on the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are within the normal range, but the memories of the severe storm surges not so long ago are still vivid. According to the Baltic Sea newspaper The measuring stations in Wismar, Warnemünde, Althagen, Barth, Stralsund, Sassnitz and Greifswald are exposed to current flood levels under private circumstances.

In Warnemünde in particular, there has been a balanced balance for years: the average lowest value, called mean low water (MNW), is 407 cm, while the situation with a mean high water (MHW) is set at an average of 617 cm. But the extreme highs cannot be ignored; the highest value of 770 cm was recorded on November 13, 1872.

The consequences of storm surges

The last severe storm surges in October 2025 caused damage amounting to 56 million euros. The situation is also tense for the city of Sassnitz; those responsible are estimating 42 million euros for the restoration of the infrastructure, which primarily affects tourist areas and harbor protection systems. The loss of sand on beaches and dunes is particularly significant, for which around 6 million euros have been earmarked.

Storm surges cannot only be seen from the corresponding water levels. On the German Baltic Sea coast, a distinction is made between different storm surge classes: While a storm surge requires a rise of up to 1.25 m above the average water level, one speaks of a very severe storm surge if this mark of 2 m is exceeded.

Prevention measures and warning systems

Flood warnings are issued by flood control centers, which are supported by various institutions - including federal, state, police and fire departments. This important information is distributed through a variety of channels: from traditional radio and television to loudspeaker trucks to modern warning apps and social media. Thanks to the LHP PublicAPI Information on around 1200 flood levels in Germany can be accessed, making it easier for those responsible to take preventive measures in a timely manner.

Given the areas affected by flooding, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a need for action on the subject of flood protection. Global climate change is exacerbating the problem as it is leading to more frequent heavy rain events. Around 400,000 people in Germany, especially along the Rhine, are at acute risk in the coming years, according to reports from Statista emerges.

However, the Rhine risk is not just a phenomenon - the destruction of natural floodplains and the sealing of areas also exacerbate the situation. Whether rebuilding after heavy rainfall or preventing future flood events, cities and communities have a duty to create clear alternatives to minimize future damage and ensure the safety of citizens.

Overall, the situation on the Baltic Sea coast remains an issue that affects everyone and requires further measures in order to be prepared for the future.
