Ferris wheel in Sassnitz: New attraction attracts holidaymakers and locals!

Sassnitz, the charming port town on the Jasmund peninsula, can look forward to a new attraction: a Ferris wheel will in future attract holidaymakers and locals and allow them to glide carefree to the heights. The construction of this temporary landmark took place last weekend (June 20th and 21st) and operations are scheduled to begin as early as Tuesday, as Baltic Sea newspaper reported. Thomas Kaul, the investor behind the Ferris wheel, has big plans for Sassnitz - in addition to the Ferris wheel, other tourist projects, such as a hotel in the historic Glasbahnhof, are being planned.

The Ferris wheel is intended to attract passers-by to the harbor and help to revitalize the region's tourist attractions. Around the harbor, a submarine museum and the reopened old freight yard add to the attractiveness of the place. Nils Peters, the owner of the freight station, is behind Kaul's plans to revitalize Sassnitz as a tourist destination.

A look at events and plans

To properly celebrate the opening, several events are planned. Next weekend there will be a summer reception by the district administrator with more than 250 guests. There is also a big party with live music on July 5th, followed by the harbor days from July 11th to 13th. A special highlight is the concert by the Symphonic Youth Orchestra on July 19th. Thomas Kaul hopes that these events will significantly increase visitor numbers and create a positive atmosphere in the port.

Still, there are challenges. While the plans for the hotel in the Glasbahnhof currently have little political support in the city parliament, Kaul is hoping for renewed discussion in the building committee on July 8th. After all, the Ferris wheel is only approved as a “floating structure” for a maximum of six months, which brings with it a certain amount of time pressure.

Sassnitz – more than just a port

In addition to the new attractions, Sassnitz also has a lot to offer culturally. The city, which was once mentioned by Theodor Fontane in “Effi Briest”, has an eventful history. Once formed from the towns of Crampas and Sassnitz, the city gained city status in 1957. Its attractive location and pretty districts off the main road offer a lot to discover. From the Rügen-Galerie shopping street to historic fishing buildings that now house galleries, cafés and restaurants – Sassnitz has something for everyone.

Tours are offered for families that are specifically tailored to the needs of small children. Participants can find out about the city's history and enjoy the beautiful views during the tour, such as over the suspension bridge to the city harbor. In addition, excursion boats depart from the city harbor to the impressive chalk cliffs, which is another highlight for visitors.

With a variety of indoor activities, including the submarine museum and the butterfly park, Sassnitz is worth a trip even in bad weather and offers its guests exciting experiences all year round.
