SailGP inspires in Sassnitz: Team Germany celebrates its first victory!

The waves are hitting high and the sails are inflating - today, August 16, 2025, the German premiere of the spectacular SailGP will take place in Sassnitz on Rügen. Here, Team Germany did everything right in the first race and emerged as the winner. This is of course a reason to celebrate, because the event not only brings a breath of fresh air to the region, but also attracts around 12,000 enthusiastic spectators who can find space in sold-out XL grandstands.

The SailGP is of great importance for the German market, emphasizes league CEO Russell Coutts and Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig also highlights the promise that the series will return in 2026 and 2027 as an important milestone for Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. “Something big is being launched here,” says Schwesig. The next races are planned for August 22nd and 23rd, 2026 and once again promise a spectacle of superlatives.

Team Germany on track

Team Germany, founded by racing legend Sebastian Vettel and Thomas Riedel, is currently in fourth place after four races in Sassnitz. The young team took eleventh place in the overall ranking. Managing director Tim Krieglstein is enthusiastic about the support of the German fans and hopes that the number of spectators of 20,000 visitors will be reached in the coming days. An exciting weekend lies ahead, with further racing on Sunday from 3.30pm.

On the other side of the regatta, however, there were also setbacks. The Brazilian boat was unable to compete because it broke apart during training after an unsuccessful nosedive. There was also a collision between the US and British catamarans in the fourth race, causing the US catamaran to be damaged.

Dynamic sailing worldwide

Things are no less exciting on the international stage. The Spain SailGP team won the Rolex SailGP Championship in New York on June 8, 2025. In this final they competed against New Zealand and France and were able to prevail triumphantly. The Spanish team has now enjoyed two consecutive victories in the USA, further cementing their rise in the standings. In the dynamic race on the Hudson River, the teams put in strong performances, with Martine Grael’s Mubadala Brazil SailGP Team celebrating its first win, but ultimately failing to qualify for the final.

The series of events attracts large numbers of fans, such as the more than 10,000 who visited Governor's Island in New York. Figures like this show that sailing is trending worldwide and that more and more people are getting excited about it.

The SailGP has established itself as an exciting spectacle that not only attracts top athletes, but also inspires the general public. In Sassnitz and beyond, it will be exciting to see how the teams will perform as the season progresses.
