Peace movement in Schwerin: Protest against an attack by the USA that violates international law!
On Saturday evening, around 25 people gathered on Schwerin's Schlossstrasse opposite the Ministry of Finance. The occasion was the nightly attack by the United States on Iranian nuclear facilities. The participants, organized by the local peace movement, described this military strike as contrary to international law and warned urgently of further escalation in the Middle East. Ulrich Leonhardt, spokesman for the Get Up Schwerin initiative, brought the spontaneous rally to life in a short time. A city representative and other local political activists stood by to set an example for peace. A Russian statement strongly criticizing the US attack was also read out.
During the meeting, participants emphasized the need for peaceful conflict resolution and expressed their concerns about a possible new major conflict. The situation remains tense, but the event has so far been quiet and without incident.
International reactions to the attack
The global reaction to the US attacks is varied and paints a picture of concern. In a conversation with Iranian President Massoud Peseschkian, French President Emmanuel Macron called for de-escalation and emphasized the need to find diplomatic solutions. Macron also consulted with countries such as Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar to discuss measures to stabilize the region. The UN Security Council is also planning a meeting on the situation in the Middle East, which illustrates the urgency of the situation.
The US attacks themselves, which according to reports resulted in over 80 injuries in Israel, are viewed by various international lawyers as illegal. [n-tv] highlights that German politicians, including members of the SPD, are talking about “playing with fire” and warning of the possible consequences. Iran's foreign minister threatened that Tehran would respond by any means necessary, and the Revolutionary Guards announced retaliation against US military bases.
The role of Israel and Iran
Israel is following developments closely and has already carried out military attacks on various targets in Iran. Dozens of military installations were attacked and four members of the Revolutionary Guard lost their lives. President Herzog described the US airstrikes as a bold step that could change the future balance in the Middle East. At the same time, it became known that Israel has closed its own airspace and tightened civil defense measures to prepare for possible reactions from Tehran.
The situation in the region could worsen further as the Iranian authorities have announced that it is impossible to scale back their nuclear activities. Iran relies on risky drone attacks and recently made an attack on Israelis in Cyprus impossible.
The international community must now ask itself how it should react to what is happening. [Spiegel] reports the danger of a spiral escalation of the conflict. The UN Secretary General makes it clear that without rapid talks and diplomatic pressure there is a risk of a major war.
