Stumbling blocks in Schwerin: Remembrance against forgetting - cleaning campaign planned!
In Schwerin, the obligatory approach to history is kept alive - the dark chapters of the past are remembered stone by stone. Stolpersteine, the small brass plates, are more than just memorial plaques; they tell the stories of victims of National Socialism. This initiative, led by Sabine Klemm, Dr. Coordinated by Bernd Kasten and Martin Klähn, an impressive 98 stumbling blocks and one stumbling block have already been laid in the state capital. Northern Courier reports that twelve new stones were placed in 2024 in particular, including for the Löwenthal family of entrepreneurs.
The committed community shows that it is important to keep memories alive. The stumbling blocks are not just mementos of Jewish victims, but also honor all those persecuted by the regime. The idea arose from a student initiative that set the first stones in motion in Schwerin. The Stolpersteine are financed through donations; each brass plate costs 120 euros.
“Cleaning against forgetting”
A further step in remembrance is the cleaning campaign “Cleaning against forgetting”, launched by Mike Ahlschläger and Thomas Rufus. This campaign, which began during the pandemic, has now gained traction in several federal states. Like the stumbling blocks, the planned cleaning activities are also an important part of the commemoration. The next campaign is planned for the period from April 8th to May 8th, 2026.
In order to keep the stumbling blocks in an appropriate condition, good materials and techniques are apparently used, similar to what is known in other areas of care, for example when cleaning furniture. This immediately makes you think of the general care that is necessary for many areas. If we talk about cleanliness, a glue roller can help remove the dust and hair - here like a cat tree. And that's no different than using a vacuum cleaner and steam cleaner to achieve thorough cleaning.
Remembering the victims of National Socialism is an ongoing task. By placing stumbling blocks and participating in the cleaning activities, we ensure that this history is not forgotten. Just as caring for a cat tree with the right tools and techniques is ongoing, so is ongoing engagement with our past.
Anyone who wants to take part in the next cleaning campaign can remember that every little action counts, and with a good handle on the topic, we should all do our part - whether small or large - to remember.
