Power outage in Schwerin: Citizens experience brief darkness!
On Wednesday afternoon it was that time again in Schwerin: A power outage caused unrest in the districts of Krebsförden, Wüstmark and parts of Schwerin-Süd. The power went out at 3:30 p.m. According to the Schwerin public utility company, the cause was a fault in the power grid in Wüstmark. But the municipal utilities acted quickly and efficiently - after about an hour the error was fixed and all nodes in the power grid were reconnected. However, several failed traffic lights led to traffic delays, posing challenges for commuters and drivers in the area. The municipal utilities informed the affected citizens and thanked them for their understanding during the troubleshooting, which was supported by the municipal utilities' own accessibility, as reported by wismar.fm.
After the light was on again, the question arose: What will happen next with the power supply in Schwerin? According to statistics from stromauss.org, there have already been a total of 21 reports of power outages in 2025, with September accounting for a particularly high proportion with eight outages. This is a striking development compared to previous years, because 59 outages were recorded in Schwerin in 2024 and 38 in 2023. In July 2023 in particular, 23 outages caused massive disruption. But the previous years were not without problems either: in 2022 there were only nine failures, which shows that the situation is becoming increasingly tense.
Power outages in Germany at a glance
But what is causing these increasing numbers? A look beyond national borders shows that blackouts are also increasing in Germany. Around a third of households were affected, as the news and knowledge platform reports. Experts urge caution and warn of possible overloading of the power grids, especially due to the rapid expansion of renewable energies such as wind and solar power. In the first half of 2024, these amounted to an impressive 65% of public net electricity generation. Nevertheless, the German electricity grid is considered one of the most stable in the world, with a supply rate of 99.997% in 2023.
The average duration of the power interruption increased to 13.7 minutes in 2023, but remained within an acceptable range. The reasons for the disruptions are varied: from road construction and broadband expansion to natural events that caused additional disruption. And so the question remains whether the causes of the increasing number of failures in Schwerin are similar. In any case, a close eye on developments in the power grid is required while the municipal utilities continue to strive to keep supply at a high level. In any case, the Schwerin region will have to continue to closely monitor the issue of electricity supply in order to be able to overcome future challenges.
