Schwerin Castle: Most popular building in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania!

Schwerin Castle, a true jewel among European residential buildings, not only delights in the beauty of its architecture but has also won a respectable place in people's hearts. This is why the castle is ranked 27th among the most beautiful castles and palaces in Europe in TUI's latest ranking. This also means it has secured the third highest place in Germany, only surpassed by Neuschwanstein Castle and Heidelberg Castle. This ranking is based on over 20,000 buildings analyzed, with Google ratings and social media reviews being the decisive criteria.

Schwerin Castle boasts an impressive average Google rating of 4.7 from 31,362 reviews. Four out of five users are willing to give the lock full points. This is remarkable, even if there are still some castles such as Burghausen Castle or Muskau Castle, which have fewer overall ratings but are at the top when it comes to top ratings.

UNESCO World Heritage: Another reason to celebrate

A few months ago, Schwerin Castle was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an award that was announced on July 30, 2024 in New Delhi. It is now part of a select group that also includes the old towns of Stralsund and Wismar as well as the beech forests in the Müritz National Park and Jasmund National Park on Rügen. According to Joachim Brenncke, chairman of the Schwerin World Heritage Association, this decision has an extremely positive effect on the city and could sustainably increase tourism.

But UNESCO is not just a noble title. The organization, which has been serving peace and international cooperation in education, art, science and culture since 1945, also actively ensures the preservation of these world heritage sites. The list of 1,200 German UNESCO sites includes some of the most famous attractions, including the Aachen and Cologne cathedrals and Berlin's Museum Island.

A cultural festival for the citizens

To properly celebrate the award, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig and Mayor Rico Badenschier are inviting people to the Great Citizens' Festival in Schwerin from October 2nd to 4th, 2025. The motto of these celebrations is “Set Sail United” and the anticipation is great. The well-known singer Roland Kaiser will perform on October 3rd, which is a highlight for many visitors.

What is particularly exciting is that Schwerin Castle has been the seat of the state parliament of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania since 1990 and is based on a historic Slavic castle complex from 965. With its impressive 35 other historic buildings and facilities in Schwerin, the city not only has a rich history to offer, but also a variety of opportunities for those interested in culture.

With currently around 97,000 inhabitants, Schwerin is the smallest German state capital, which will certainly be on the radar of many tourists with its newly won award and the upcoming celebrations.
