Stralsund: Unusual finds in the lost property office – auction soon!
There is a lot to discover in Stralsund, because the local lost property office has a lot to offer. Whether it's a lost wallet or a neighbor's bike - many lost items are waiting to be picked up by the rightful owner. As the Ostsee-Zeitung reports, the lost property office in the Hanseatic city is the central point of contact for found items that are worth at least 10 euros. 150 to 200 lost items are recorded here every year, including many impressive finds.
Did you know that wallets go missing particularly often in the parking spaces at Strelapark or at Edeka in Andershof? Even high-priced items, like a Rolex watch, are making the rounds, testifying to the valuable items that are often forgotten or lost. The retention requirement requires that these items must be kept for at least six months. They can then be auctioned, donated or disposed of.
Bicycles and bizarre finds
A large proportion of the lost property received are bicycles - from e-bikes to completely worn out bikes. Some of these two-wheelers are real treasures that could also attract bargain hunters at the next auction. According to information from the Ostsee-Zeitung, the next auction will take place at the end of the year and will be conducted online. Motor scooters from 2021 can also be auctioned here, while the dusty treasures remain in the lost and found warehouse in a well-locked basement.
But it's not just bicycles, there are also strange objects such as a water pistol, backpacks and even a four-man tent. A backpack with an empty vodka-cola can in particular makes law enforcement officers smile. If you have a good hand at auctions, you could secure a bargain or two from these bizarre finds.
The path to the rightful owner
If you have had the embarrassing mishap of a lost item, you can rely on the support of the lost property office. Found items can be handed in during opening hours in the lost property office itself or outside in a mailbox on Mühlenstrasse. The doors at the local police station are also always open to good Samaritans. And if you discover your lost item, you can search for it using the lost property online search, regardless of opening times.
Those who find lost things can be happy because there is a statutory finder's fee of 5% for values up to 500 euros, and 3% above. Even if many finders forego this claim, it remains another nice incentive to honor good deeds and return lost treasures.
Next time you stroll through the streets of Stralsund, keep your eyes peeled. Maybe you can track down one or two lost pieces again. As the saying goes: “You can always find something if you just look carefully”!
