The Sana HANSE Clinic Wismar has taken a significant step towards improved patient safety: It was honored with bronze certification in Patient Blood Management (PBM). This award recognizes the consistent implementation of the principles of PBM, which aim to manage allogeneic blood products. How Wismar.fm reports, the program aims to reduce the need for blood transfusions, strengthen patients' endogenous resources and increase the quality of medical treatment.
An important feature of PBM is the structured recording and optimization of blood status before operations. The main measure is to diagnose anemia early and initiate targeted therapies, such as intravenous iron administration. This not only contributes to patient safety but also improves clinical outcomes. While the World Health Organization has been calling for the integration of PBM into everyday medical practice since 2011, a network has now developed in Germany that supports clinics in implementing PBM standards PatientBloodManagement.de documented.
Dr. Jens Köpcke, the senior physician and doctor responsible for transfusions at the Sana HANSE Clinic, played a key role in the certification process. The bronze certification is not only a success for the team, but also the start of a comprehensive project that aims to further optimize the structures and processes in the hospital and sustainably increase patient safety. This approach is particularly important in modern healthcare systems, where avoiding allogeneic blood transfusions is becoming increasingly important.
The project will pay particular attention to reducing maternal mortality and traumatic hemorrhage morbidity and mortality rates. In this context, PBM aims to improve the overall health of the population through effective anemia management strategies, even in resource-limited settings. Therefore, expertise from countries with different health standards is also included to collect and adapt best practices.
The efforts of the Sana HANSE Clinic Wismar are a ray of hope in the growing movement towards safer and more effective handling of blood products in hospitals. With the aim of achieving greater patient safety, the clinic has already implemented reliable structures in the past. The team wants to continue working to meet patient-specific needs and further strengthen trust in medical care.
